Ranger graduation schedule

Post by Diski »

Hi Everybody,

Here is my INTRO:

My son has been in the Army since Aug 04.He loves what he is doing thus far. He is now a PFC and in Ranger School, with a grad date of Nov 23 (fingers, toes & eyes crossed). Never been in active service.
Oh- Today is his 20th Birthday...

SO, we are very very proud of his accomplishments thus far. We want to support him in every way possible, which means attending his Ranger Graduation on THANKSGIVING Week, thank you very much! (He graduated BT same time last year, so it seems we are developing a pattern of poor timing).

questions...
Will he return to his prior company, or are Rangers given a new Ballalion, Company? The reason I ask is his company is supposed to deploy 1st or 2 nd week of december & wondered if he will be recovered enough.

How does the Graduation week work- will he have any time with us anytime before Graduation? What he do after graduation- will he have to stay on Benning, or is he given time off? (after Basic, he had 2 weeks, so we flew him home to hang with friends & family. Was wondering if he will have any of that this time around).

My daughters also want to celebrate his accomplishment and spend time with him, but they are both college students with mid terms, projects and homework as well as jobs to concider. So time management is a priority.

We are getting ready to purchase plane and hotel reservations before the prices hit the roof or they are sold out, and before we know for SURE that he will even graduate.

Just how much time should we allow to spend with him? I am guessing that Monday- Friday would be a fairly sure bet, but it is Thanksgiving week, so he may have more free time-maybe?

Is Monday to early to get to Atlanta with a graduation on Wednesday? When should we make the return trip home? We want to spend as MUCH time as we can with him, concidering he could-to the best of our knowledge- be deployed in a very short week following graduation.

Totally clueless abt his schedule and frustrated as hell!

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to the site. Best of luck to your Warrior.
To answer some of your questions....

My family drove from MN to see my graduation, in which I didn't get my GO until three days prior to the end of Florida phase so I cut it too close. If I didn't get my GO I was to call and leave a message on their anwsering machine which they constantly checked. They got to Benning on a Thurs. I graduated on a Friday. Thursday evening parents could come to Darby and visit for a short time. Friday morning was the ceremony and then released to the real world. So I got to spend Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with them until it was wheels up back to Ft. Lewis, WA. And yes he will return to fight with his same Batt Brothers. My advice plan on him graduating, I would get there the day before, have a contingency plan for if he is a NO-GO, and drive on from there. Back in '95, I had to set up my plane ticket back so I had a some options when to go back. Hope this helps. Again, best of luck and congradulate your Warrior for us when he does get his shit.

I then asked the Lord: "Why was there only one set of footprints?"
He answered: "The terrain was beginning to constrict and our hit time was coming close. So I put us in a Ranger file."

Welcome and thanks to your son for his service.

I'm sure 1/75 Ranger Mom will help square you away on the Ranger School Graduation info. But as Ranger Maggot said, you probably will not get much notice. I believe we got 3-4 days notice at most. But then I live close enough Columbus to drive in less than a day so that was enough.

Congrats on your son's performance. I know you're proud.

Get a BIG turkey for Thanksgiving, so he can gnaw on the bones for a week. Fatten him up during his leave as best as you can.

I'd say that "will he be recovered enough to deploy" is NOT an issue for him to ponder. The weight loss and physical condition of a RS grad has never really been an official issue. Leaves are granted afterward as a courtesy, there's no requirement to have one.

Be grateful for your time with him, and for his continued successes, and for the fact that in going into harm's way he will have professionals covering his back rather than 18 year old kids who know diddly.
