I spent one December 7th at the USS Arizona in dress blues, not really knowing why I was going until I got there. I had been on the island for a week and didnt realize what day it was. I don't know how those men come out every year. A very touching yet strange feeling. Couldn't do it again.

I'm listening to Lars Larson (NW conservative radio personality) on the radio at work, and an elderly woman called in to talk about her trip to Pearl Harbor to view the Arizona Memorial, and mentioned that there were some groups of Japanese tourists on the launch speaking Japanese and laughing amongst themselves. Lars said he had experienced the same type of behavior on a trip he made there with his wife.

I know if I had been privy to behavior like that there would have been some tourists swimming home. I had a similiar experience with my ex-wife at the changing of the guard ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknowns back in 1995. She made some trite comment about the ceremony, and I went ballistic.

I told her we guard the tomb because these men made the ultimate sacrifice and we were unable to return them to their loved ones, and it was a lasting tribute by their brothers-in-arms, the highest honor that we could bestow upon them, and that she needed to shut the fuck up so I could pay my respects.

The thing with those tourists, it was not on December 7th, no one goes to the memorial except authorized personnel for that day(i.e. survivors, children of survivors, spouses of the deceased and survivors, and the Marines guarding it).

Reminds me of having to goto Iwo Jima for the memorial, I didn't want the japanese there. But it's their island, fucking political correctness. I have no ill feelings towards japan, just seemed wrong so many men died there just for us to give it back years later, and then have a meeting of forces.

It is really sad that I spent most of the day yesterday at the VA hospital in Charleston SC and even there not much was even said about it being Pearl Harbor Day. My kids who are 5 and 10 got a history lesson on monday night just like they do the eve of any historical event or any other event that I think deems notice. I asked them when they came home from school yesterday if they had talked about Pearl Harbor at school and they both said no. Nothing was mentioned. I then decided to try and find something on the television , hoping the history channel might have a show on that the kids could learn from and once again there was nothing. I may have missed it but it damn well seemed that people are forgetting their history and herritage more and more except for a small group of us. There is a sign at the VA hospital here that says "The price of freedom is visible here" . I know it may sound trivial to some but it has had a profound affect on me. RIP my brothers.

Though the years I have met "Survivors of Pearl Harbor" These men and women have always had nice comments, love of fellow man, and a bright outlook on life. These men/women I have known have now passed on to join those who passed long ago. May GOD in all his infinte wisdom take you all to his bosom and show you all the fruits of happiness. ~S~
