2nd LT's do not serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Only 1st LTs and only those who have had a successful turn as a Platoon Leader in another unit, usually always a light infantry or airborne unit.

Usually when an infantry soldier serves in the 75th Ranger Regiment long enough to become an NCO, which by definition means he has earned his tab, and becomes an officer afterwards, you always find them making a return trip to the Regiment later, to lead a platoon.

However, he still needs to have a successful turn as a platoon leader somewhere else first, and he still has to pass Ranger Orientation Program before receiving his assignment in the 75th Ranger Regiment.

Of course, there are many unknowns about you that lay between here and there. I would not make any assumptions that just because you want this to happen that it will.

but my father, who was once in the military
that makes your father no kind of authority on the way the Army is now.

tell him to piss off.

You wanna Ranger Contract, ENLIST. You wanna be an O, go to OCS.

then pray you get scraps behind all the West pointers and ROTC Honor Studs who take all the infantry slots.

You could still go to college first and then go enlisted, you'd be making about $500 more per month as a specialist then as a private.

Hey TJS525,
If I were you, I'd enlist. Actually, I am you, was you, at least in your position. I have a degree too, and I had a choice to make. I enlisted and am DAMN thankful I did. There's a whole shitload of info that I could have never prepared for, never. Stuff thats just not found in any of the TMs, FM, ARs. It's only gained through experience. I'm constantly getting information that makes my life a HELL of alot easier and more streamlined from E-2 (busteds) through E-4s who've gone to the sandbox and back, not to mention the Sergeants. Sometimes it's blatant and they tell you "this is how we did it and why." Sometimes its through the crapload of stories you spend just being Joes and gettin to know each other. I could not imagine the world of shit that I would be in if I had to lead men at this point. I've been a leader in almost everything I've ever done. Work, sports, even just doin the right thing, you name it. But we're talkin about men's LIVES and that's not something that I'm honestly prepared to lead just yet. But thanks to people that you would never be able to associate with if you were an officer, I'm gettin my ass squared away. Not saying that fellow officers couldn't square you away, not at all, but there's a hell of alot more joes to learn from than O's. I decided that it wouldn't be fair to the men under me if I were to go OCS. I'll save that for a second enlistment, if even at all. There's ALOT to be said for being an NCO, and don't sell that path short. This is the path I decided to take after I had to swallow alot of pride and be honest with myself, but it was the right choice for ME. If you feel you're ready to become an officer, then have at it stud, and I wish ya the best of luck.
