declared intent 70 (SF)

Post by JSH »

In my introduction as JsHooah! a discussion about a part of my contract was occurring here is the discussion so far.

JSH
...I ship out March 17th, as a PFC and have an 11X, option 40, and declared 70 contract.

what's that?
Ranger Bell
...Ditto.
JSH
Declared option 70 is, "Declared Intent to Special Forces." This can only be used after a year of being stationed.
Ranger Bell
Welcome aboard.

Thanks for the clarification on the 70 thing. It really didn't clarify anything for me because I never heard of it. SF intent after a year at duty station? You make it to the Rangers and you'll be lucky to see Ranger School in the first year. They be kinda busy. I don't understand the reason or the purpose of that 70 thing. You can always request transfer to SF when you feel like you're ready to go. Most units will let you go with no problem.

Does that 70 thing obligate you to anything? I still don't get it.

To Ranger Bell's last responce.

Ranger Bell,

I will give you a more thorough answer after I gather some information together. Initially I will say this... I see it to have similar advantages as the option 40, setting a prescribed path before you and letting everyone else know ahead of time your intentions and what they may need to do to prepare you for that path. As for an obligation no I do not believe I have to use the option if I choose not to. Also the one year of being station is just the minimum.

I recommend you let the RIP Cadre know when you get there that you are just using service in a Ranger Bn as a stepping stone into SF.

My exact thought. That 70 thing will keep him from schools. Why should the Rangers train him for anything? Let SF do it.

I still don't see the need for that 70 thing. It's stupid. It'll only hurt you in the long run.

Currently I am a civilian, and I wouldnt even tell that to the RIP Cadre. Be it my luck I would say it to Ranger H8Train, and he would say, "What do you Navy sheep call it? THE QUARTERDECK THATS IT, GET ON MY FUCKING QUARTERDECK." And I would do it.

I'd fix that post Marine. Ranger is the proper way to address Ranger's on this board.

Here is the inside scoop on the Option 70 thing.

It is a fucking hoax. Recruiters will often use it as a snag to catch those that WANT to do the SF thing, but aren't totally committed. The recruiters tell you that it will give you time in the Army to get into shape, learn a little about the Army....then you have the option to meet, or not, with an SF recruiter to begin your paperwork to attend SFAS.

Well, it is a requirement that every E-4, male, across the Army attend an SFAS briefing. It is a tool for recruiters that don't have anything to really offer.

So, those of you that get sucked into this option......welcome to Uncle Sugar's funhouse.
I was in 2/75 from 97 to 00. 5-99

I have the Option 70 letter in my contract. When I went to reserve my Opt40 for MEPS on my recruiters computer, he kind of just added that for "shits and giggles." I thought it was just a letter.

I don't understand the purpose of it. If the Regiment knows what the 70 thing is, you won't get schools. I'd do anything I could to remove "shits and giggles" from that contract.

Ranger Bell I know it wont give me anything else, and I don't expect it to. I have my Option 40 and thats all I care about, and I don't want to try to go get the Opt70 thing removed because I don't want them to try and fuck me and say my whole contract will have to renegotiated.
