My Intro

Post by BillW »

I served in the 1/508th abn inf, 82nd airborne from 72 to 75. My MOS was 05C, radio teletype operator. I never deployed, never hunted for Ho Chi Minh in the A Shau valley, ran black ops in Cambodia or Laos or whatever the current poser bullshit that’s currently floating around the net. I was just one of a million or so people that served a tour of duty, and went home and lived their lives.

My son came home two days ago and told us he’s going to join the army. My first word was Airborne? His response was fuck no, you’re the only nut case in this family. The first thing that went through my mind was fucking pussy but I didn’t say it. I’m learning in my old age. I’m proud of him for wanting to enlist.

He’s going to take the ASVAB on Monday. He also has 72 college credits in Information Technology. He asked if I would look over his contract before he signed it and I agreed so I’ve been searching the net for information about current army practices. Fuck, it’s been 35 years since I wore a uniform. I found a wealth of information on this site so I thought I’d register and post an intro. I felt like a peeping tom going through all of your threads without anyone knowing who I was.

If anyone has any information that I can use I’d appreciate you mentioning it. I know recruiters are basically salesmen looking out for the best interest of their employer. I just want to make sure my son gets a good deal before he makes his commitment.

Thanks for letting me visit your house.

Welcome Paratrooper.
Thanks for raising your son right, well, almost. Still, a uniform sans wings is better than no soldier suit at all. :)

He is an IT guy? The US is finally setting up a cyberwarfare defense command. This is the most important thing the nation can be doing right now, maybe he can be part of it?
One thing hasn't changed since our day, your son gets only what he is guaranteed in writing in his contract. The recruiter's nod and handshake is worth little.

You might hint that our regiment uses IT MOSs too.
Good luck!

I think it's noble to enlist with any MOS, especially in this day and age. We are fighting all around the globe, and you can bet he'll be deployed to a combat area at some point, no matter what he does.

Welcome to the site, and thanks for your service.

Thanks for the welcome. Is it OK if I print off some of the PT regimens posted here? Also is being called a leg still an insult or did that go the way of fatigues, breaking starch and CWEI bags? just need to know how to 'address' my son when he comes back from boot camp. :)

Welcome, Trooper. Being called a leg is still an insult only if the addressee knows what it means. And I suspect that most legs know what it means.
