We had this young private come to our unit who proceeded to go into Fayetteville and purchase a ragged out 1971 Mach 1 Mustang for much more than it was worth at one of those buy-here/pay-here car lots.

He also financed a big-ass TV, guitar, and all kinds of crap. About 3 weeks later, he decided that Army life wasn't for him, and he pawned all that overpriced shit that he was still paying for via payroll deduction, bought some acid and went AWOL.

A couple of weeks later, he turned up at the barracks after being dropped off by the MPs. Turns out he was found wearing shorts standing in the middle of a snowbank in the Sierra Nevada's trying to put tire chains on his car (which was upside down). He was still tripping, and when asked how he was going to pay for his medical treatment, he plopped down his military ID, and said I'm in the Army.

Needless to say, he didn't have a car, didn't have all the high-priced toys, didn't have any money, and got the shit beat out of him by this huge fucker that got screwed out of going to Daytona for the 500 when this prick went AWOL (someone from his squad got tapped for this asshole's CQ duty).

Last I recall, he was always donating plasma for money because nearly his entire check was going to pay for shit he didn't have.

If you are a single private, if it wasn't issued, you probably won't need it.

If the car dealership has a sign that says "WE FINANCE. E-1 AND UP." then stay the hell away!

I'm actually going a step further, Airborne Marine Leatherneck. I got a nice signing bonus and will be partnering up with my brother to buy some real estate. He's been at this for some time and the ROI has been higher (and more stable) than the stock market.

I know for most privates this isn't an option, but the importance of saving and investing can't be overstated.

Not only will the civilians rip you off, the guys you are with will be more than happy to take advantage of your stupidity. They'll loan you $20 for $40 back so fast it will make your head spin. Not repaying barracks loans can be VERY painful. And if you don't REALLY know how to play games of chance, stay out of them. I knew a guy that payed for a car playing poker. I figure I payed for the spare tire and the steering wheel!

Sage advice. DEPs, this is some of the best advice you'll ever get.
"When you look at this final agreement that we came to with the White House, I got 98 percent of what I wanted. I’m pretty happy." John Boehner

''If we took away the minimum wage — if conceivably it was gone — we could potentially virtually wipe out unemployment completely because we would be able to offer jobs at whatever level.''

Good advice LN.

Also, if you can put $ 50 or $ 75 bucks away for retirement (into and IRA) when you are 18 you will be amazed at how quickly it can build up. I know you aren't thinking that way now but you can retire and do the things you want to do instead of eating dogfood and using candles for heat....or you can just blow it on beer and pussy like the rest of us did.

Thanks for starting this thread Marine Airborne Leatherneck and also to the Rangers and Veterans that gave more advice on the subject.

I'll be sure to watch out for this in the future (when I finally enlist )

SpearmintRhino wrote:Be careful of guys that would come to the barracks hawking life insurance . They'll make you comfortable by telling you about their own military past, and how they were always broke, and how you can "put aside $60 through a deduction from your paycheck, that will become more than $755,000 when you turn 59 1/2 years old". They will have all the forms handy, and drown you in their sales talk. Most of it is just a scam, and I spent about 8 months trying to get rid of the wrongdoings of just such a fucker. Some were banned from entering Ft Benning, so they invited the guys up over to the Arby's or somewhere off post.

Also beware of the strippers and other assorted "weekend b****es", that you see going hand in hand with some poor guy in Class B's around Walmart or the bars on Victory Drive. They're just out there to suck you dry of your money.

Thank you Leatherneck for such an initiative.
Amen to that brother!

Speaking of stripers. DEPs, I'll say this once and listen to me.

STRIPPERS ONLY LOVE YOU FOR YOUR MONEY. NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY SAY "OH, YOU'RE DIFFERENT. I REALLY LIKE YOU". THEY JUST WANT YOUR FUCKING MONEY AND NOTHING MORE

Too many times have I seen privates fall for this. "Oh man, I spent 300 dollars on this one chick and she asked me out on a date!".

DONT FALL FOR IT!.

Or I am just working my way through college. I am different. Fucking stupid privates.

It sounds like we have heard them all. Any others out there. I bet some of the girls hanging around here know some too as they use them.

Thank you Leatherneck. This advice will be put to use.

Speaking on strippers, I have learned in my 8 months of being 18, leave your ATM card at home. The douche bag anouncer guy with the mic will convince you that if you dont spend 75 dollars for the VIP room, you are missing out. Plus the ATM machines there takes like 5% for the transfer charge.
