Many Thanks

Post by Moni D »

I would like to thank those of you who chose to help me with my speech against Women in the Rangers. Even if you don't think you provided much help, I took away some new insight after talking with each of you:
Ranger Silverback,
Ranger BadMuther,
Ranger Bell,
Ranger Desert Sloth,
Ranger Disinfertention,
Ranger H8 Train.

Also, Placebo- the article onSOCNET you pointed me to was very interesting, and gave me an insight to the OTHER side of the debate.

Thank you all for putting up with my numerous PMs, dumbass questions, asking the same thing repeatedly because i STILL didn't have a grip on it.... I am sure I drove many of you nuts, and you still were patient with me. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Women in the Rangers: Is Equality a Myth?

Post by Moni D »

Okies- here is what I wrote. Now what i SAID varies somewhat (always does, same info, different delivery), but this is essentially what I used :D I got a B+, not due to content, but because of organissation & delivery...Plus I was missing a key component of the assignment, which I simply waited too long and ran out of time, so that is my fault entirely. He did say it was an A calibre speech though :D:

In recent years, the role of women in combat has grown, as has the awareness of such, especially after the capture of several women in Iraq, notably Jessica Lynch and Shoshanna Johnson. As more and more women clamor for equality, the likelihood of a woman being placed in harms way increases as well. There are many military careers still closed to women today, including the one on which I will focus, the United States Army Rangers. The training standards for such units are incredibly high, the chance of completing such training, only about 50-60% at a maximum, according to a 26 year old Staff Sergeant, who is a Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) Instructor. He is also a 6 year member of the 75th Ranger Regiment. As an RIP instructor, this man has the task of breaking the Ranger Candidates who don’t have the mental and physical capacity to succeed.

There are many reasons a Ranger Candidate doesn’t succeed. They are tested mentally as well as physically. Many of those quitting do so solely because they can no longer take the abuse, whether physically or mentally. As one 19 year old PFC with 10 months in the Regiment told me, the Ranger Instructors “smokeâ€

Not bad. The biggest reason I have heard for allowing women into combat in no matter what field it is they should be treated equally. Well the military doesn't treat women equally, it gives them special treatment. The PT test is done differently, they do not have to meet the same phyisical standards anywhere in the military and yet they are given the same pay and same rank. I saw it time and time again in Airborne school where they couldn't keep up to PLDC a leadership school where little or no standards were the same for male and female. The Ranger Regiment holds all Rangers no matter the age to the 18 year old standard but you can bet if a women ever gets in it will be because the standards are lowered same for Ranger school. Airborne school is a piece of cake if you can get over your fear of heights, but the school used to weed out the weak by PT. But all the women fell out of runs and nothing was done or said but the men were expected to finish. 17,000 people pass airborne school every year, it should be called EVERYONE school because it sure doesn't make paratroopers anymore.

It has nothing to do with how someone was raised. It has do to with body make up and strength. I am sure there are women who can out run me and probably do more pushups but they are probably few and far between. But that is only part of it, good women runners usually are smaller and could they carry a 70lb ruck when they only weight 100 lbs and carry a machine gun. That is only getting to the objective but what about assualting acrossed the objective with that equipment.

There is so much required of a Ranger and the only way a women will make it is by lowering the standards. I do expect it to happen.

I have many women working for me now. Most of my best employees are women. So they can do most jobs. But the military has a specific task, to defend this country and kill the enemy. We should only have the best doing that and right now we lower the standards (for men and women) to allow us all to be equal which then gets good soldiers, Marines, Air Men and Squids killed. There are some professions where we have the time to be politically correct but the military isn't one of them.

I disagree, only in that I think sociological conditioning DOES make a difference, in some respects. I think if a girl is raised to believe she CAN do anything, then the differences ARE pretty much physical.
However, if a girl is raised to believe she has to be a "lady" and CANT compete with boys, then the way she was raised DOES make a difference. It takes a LONG time to overcome what you learn growing up...I know from experience :)
