Prosecutors: Faked military records cost VA, tarnished medals
By GENE JOHNSON
AP LEGAL AFFAIRS WRITER
SEATTLE -- Eight people who faked their military service in conflicts dating to World War II have been charged in the Northwest this year, and another four cases are under investigation, federal officials said Friday.
The fraudulent claims not only dishonored those who actually served, but also cost the Veterans Administration and other agencies more than $1.4 million in benefits, said Doug Carver, with the VA's Office of the Inspector General. There are dozens more cases pending across the country, he said.
"The 'phony war hero' phenomenon ... tarnishes the service of thousands of veterans who have served honorably," Carver said. "It strangles VA resources from providing critical care and benefits from deserving veterans."

Veterans project said to contain false Medal of Honor stories
By Lisa Burgess, Stars and Stripes
Mideast edition, Thursday, September 20, 2007
ARLINGTON, Va. — The Veterans History Project, a multimillion-dollar collection of over 50,000 oral and written war stories from Americans sponsored by the Library of Congress, is rife with errors, exaggerations, and what appears to be outright lies, according to outside experts scrutinizing the site.
Of 49 purported Medal of Honor recipients who told their stories to the project, 24 turned out to never have been awarded the nation’s highest military decoration, according to Doug Sterner, one of the country’s foremost experts in high-level military honors.
After reviewing the project’s Web site and cross-referencing it with his own databases, Sterner said, he found at least 32 out of 100 veterans who claimed to have earned the Distinguished Service Crosses did not, and 14 out of 50 entries improperly claimed the Navy Cross.

Medal of Honor fiction
Library of Congress’ Web site holds 24 bogus valor claims
By John Hoellwarth - Staff writer

The Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project, which for the past seven years has been collecting oral and written histories of veterans’ war experiences, contains 24 entries for Medal of Honor recipients that are bogus, according to official records.
Of the 49 purported recipients of the nation’s highest award for combat valor who have participated in the nationwide project by telling their story for posterity, only 25 appear on the official Medal of Honor registry mandated by Congress in 1916, which includes 3,463 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who have earned the medal since its inception.
The bogus entries came to light based on a review of Veterans History Project records by Doug Sterner, who maintains an extensive, yet unofficial, online database of valor award recipients, and Mary Schantag, who runs the POW Network, a Web site listing U.S. prisoners of war.
Their review also turned up 47 history project participants who appear to claim unearned service crosses — the nation’s second-highest combat award — and 45 participants who falsely claim to have been prisoners of war.

What's funny is the following paragraph taken from this article:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/642 ... Valor.html
I didn't know that we were bombing Hanoi in 1943. :?Acting U.S. Attorney Jeff Sullivan said he served in Vietnam, and that his father, a B-24 pilot, was shot down and killed while bombing a Hanoi cement plant a week before Sullivan was born in 1943. He said he took the cases of these "phonies, liars and thieves" personally, and added that he hoped publicity about the cases would discourage others from doing it.

More people are embellishing their records, but the Stolen Valor Act helps punish them to the fullest
By John Hoellwarth and Michael Hoffman - Staff writers

As he watched former Marine Preston Garris stand before the North Carolina General Assembly and receive accolades from state lawmakers at a ceremony for Silver Star recipients, former Marine Bill Carr decided he couldn’t keep quiet anymore.
Shortly after the ceremony, in July 2005, Carr and former Army combat medic Mike Burris told FBI officials that Marine discharge documents existed that called into question Garris’ retired rank and his Silver Star. Garris was a representative on the North Carolina Veterans Affairs Commission at the time.
“All the senators came over and shook his hand and hugged his neck, and that’s when I said this is enough,â€

And Mega force wasn't involved in Operation Burnt Biscuit until 96 when the operation was changed to Operation "Lumpy Gravy". If you're going to pose at least get your facts straight!
