shin splints

Doc, (am i allowed ot call you that yet? If not my apologies(sp)) is it possible to fracture the small bone in your lower leg (fibia?) and still be able to run and be active, but still have a shin splint in the same place? If not perhaps briuse the bone and have a shin splint. what exactly is a bruised bone? sorry about all the questions and any info would be greatly appreciated.
