What gear did you carry, and what would you carry?

Post by BadMuther »

2nd line Gear. Lce, LBE, RACK, whatnot. Where you carry the majority of your gear that isn't in your pockets or in your pack.

What did you carry when you were in, and what would you carry now if you were going in harm's way.

When I was in, I carried the regular LCE......2 compass pouches, 4 mag pouches, and 2 canteen pouches....I had a compass in one compass pouch, 2 traumedic bandages in the other, along with some xxxx tape, some eng. tape, and a small vs-17 piece, and a small signal mirror. I carried 6 mags in two of my mag pouches. In the other two I carried a mini-maglite, some motrin/misc pills, a leatherman, a lighter, cammie stick, a BFA, a mirror, a small thing of tripwire, small bottle of CLP, small medic scissors, heat tab, and electrical tape.

I had the earplugs in my r. canteen pocket and my water pur tabs in my left canteen pocket. My left canteen pouch held a canteen cup and a stove.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

My LCE was situated so that the canteens were as far forward as possible. Approximately over my back pockets. This way it didn't interfere with me wearing a ruck.

These days for my gear I carry all the above in a RACK or other chest rig, plus

small e-trex gps
surefire 6z (replaces minimag)
strobe
radio
sometimes also a talkabout
flares
chemlights
additional med gear
550 cord
misc e&e gear-space blanket,trashbags,etc.
spare batteries
folding saw

I add or subtract med gear/survival gear depending on what I am doing.

I have my pistol in a dropleg and my SRK on my belt.
Sometimes I'll add my leatherman and my surefire to my belt depending on what I am doing.

I'm not a big fan of the drop leg holster and I am trying to figure out a spot for it on my chest harness.

I collect gear and have quite a few rigs set up. I'm also a fan of the Nylon Blackhawk tac vests.

I'll post a few pics on here in a few.

So let's hear what you used to carry, and what you would carry now.

Then:
2 magpouches, 2 canteens, 2 firstaid pouches(one held my compass), and my Randall.
Now:
All according to where I'm going, for how long, and what the weather is going to be like.

Equipment I carried on one mission in Iraq (Helo infil)

Worn:
Body Armor
Mich helmet (w/NVG's, strobe light)
Chem suit (MOPP level 2)
Nomex gloves
Bolle tactical goggles
Molle vest

Carried:
Black Hawk thigh rig w/ 9mm Berretta
3 9mm mags (15rds a piece)
1 M4 carbine (ACOG sight, PEQ2 laser, surfire tac light, ready mag)
12 mags of 5.56mm
25 rds .12 gauge (buckshot) TL's carried shotguns
2 M67 frag grenades
5 flashbang grenades
1 claymore mine
3 blocks of C4 plastic explosives (time fuse, 4 initiators, 50ft detonation cord)
1 flex linear door charge
1 CLS bag (I.V., turniquet, Culex, Israeli dressing, 1 roll surgical tape)
1 mini sledge hammer (manual breach)

You would be amazed at how much shit you can carry with MOLLE.

I would have ditched all the chemical shit, the claymore, the CLS bag, and the 9mm.

Seriously, when my bird left Benning, it was colder than shit. We landed to that wonderful Panama climate. Humid and 85. No time to climatize. That was why my flac vest found its way to the weeds. There were heat casulties all over the place. I didn't want to be one.

It is funny looking back on it, though.

No body new I did it. There were so many heat casulties and my AG was having a hard time so I had him get rid of it. An AG having a heat stroke with a tripod, is much worse than having an AG with no heat problems wth no trypod. Climatizing down there was hard on alot of the guys. A big part of my decision was based on the fact that I was damn good with that gun either way. 8) There is nothing in the history books yet, But in some ways, I did shit that was unheard of in that conflict. That's another story.
