I thought the Recce Reg was the new Ranger" batt.

There was no UK until James of Scotland became James I of England.
By his decree Scotland, Wales, England and now,N.Ireland became the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
The Special Forces Units of the UK do not recruit regionally and so represent an equal mix from throughout the Isles.
This would explain the more or less generic cap badge as is the SAS winged dagger.
