Tell us about your recruiting experience Knightcat. Where did you go to MEPS, how hard was it to get the Option 40 and what are you doing now to prepare? Will you go in before meeting your degree requirements and what degree were you trying to get?
Do your friends/family give you shit for going to serve?
And lastly, why do you want to be a Ranger? Who/What inspired you do to this?

recruiting....lol
Ranger Spartan,
My recruiting experience was lengthy but not bad. I went to Sacramento MEPS several times before I signed that dotted line. ASVAB, Physical, Ortho Consut. My ortho consult was for my knee that I had surgery on to repair a torn ACL and MCL. The doc at MEPS cleared me without reservation. I went in and straight up told the career counselor that if I couldn't get an option 40 then I would be back when one was available. He looked at me and said..."No problem...lets go ahead and reserve you a spot right now." Keep in mind this is hours before they normally call people in to reserve a job. Needless to say I was pleased.
As far as my degree...I have 85 units and decided to put in on hold. I couldn't bear to see men dying in Iraq, so I enlisted when the war was underway. I was working on a Criminal Justice degree that will be easy to finish when the time comes.
I am currently running around 25 miles a week, which isn't nearly enough, but I am also weight training heavily. I have put on 25 pounds since May 03. I have been concentrating on chest, back, and especially legs. I have also taken advice from a Ranger that I should run barefoot on cement to toughen up my feet. This was very bloody at first, but now is not that bad. Ever felt sandpaper feet? I have already made E-3 and scored a 285 on my APFT. My goal is to max it out before reporting to Basic.
As far as inspiration to be a Ranger...I have always wanted to since I was a little kid. Just learning about military history in 7th grade inspired me. The things that Rangers have done in the past made me want to be as honorable as they were. I believe in Excelsior, and Rangers have the same mind set.
People don't give me any shit because I am the type of guy that always has an argument for my actions...The only shit I have gotten was from an ex-SEAL at a bar...He tried to fight me...LOL...stinks when a DEP can get the best of a squid.
After writting this...I think I need a brew.

BTW thanks for being receptive to a DEPer, even though I should be on my face.

awww....that is just wrong, but funny. The mental picture of that is something out of a bad nightmare. If this happened I would become the world's best long distance runner, that is for damn sure. But hey you gotta do what you gotta do...I'll stick to toughening up my feet, but thanks...LOL

Seriously KnightCat - it sounds like you're pretty squared away there, except for the running barefoot on concrete part. I don't think that is a good idea at all and nowhere while serving as a Ranger will you be required to do it. Even in Ranger School, all the running is done in running shoes, not boots as they used to do in the past. I went through Ranger School in 1985 and all runs were conducted in running shoes back then.
thanks
Ranger Spartan,
Thanks for the support and advice, but I personally believe that I can never be squared away...it's what keeps me going. As far as the running barefoot, I did it because I had the feet of a 3 year old girl. I don't have to worry about blisters anymore...that was my only reason for doing it. I will not stop until I meet my goal...I hope to someday be part of the Brotherhood.

knightcat you did not mention what your family thought of all this. Also are you from the west coast or what? You live in a state where people have to sue to obtain drivers license forms in English and where they want to give drivers licenses, free school and medical to illegal fucking aliens. I was curious as to where the R.E. Lee quote came from being that the Southern White Male and all history relating to him are the ultimate evil in the eyes of the far left where you live.

california....what a joke
I know what you mean about the freakin' ultra liberals. My family is very conservative and very Republican, they are from Arkansas and Texas. I can't speak for this damn state, but my idol is Robert E. Lee. He was the ultimate gentleman and a very honorable man. I happen to be a member of Kappa Alpha Order...our spiritual founder is Robert E. Lee so that is where it came from.cbar10 wrote:knightcat you did not mention what your family thought of all this. My family is very supportive of me joining the Army. And people don't tend to talk shit to me about politics or the military because I will win. As far as I am concerned, I won't live in this state ever again because of the reasons you mentioned above.
