Introduction- Elijah

Post by elijahm33 »

Hello Rangers,

My name is Elijah and am currently going into my Senior year of high school. June 30 of this year I went to MEPS to secure an EOD contract. Low and behold that particular MOS requires a drivers license, and due to financial limitations, have been unable to go through the necessary training. I decided I wanted to sign a contract that day, and there just happened to be a lone 11x Opt 40 available. I told the counselor that that is what I wanted and here I am. I wanted the Army to give me a challenge, and from what I've read so far I'm fixing to get one. I understand that the challenge of becoming a Ranger does not start at OSUT, Airborne, or even RASP. It starts NOW as I am starting to physically and mentally prepare myself for what's coming. I've been reading the plethora of information found on this site for about a week and figured I would introduce myself. I leave for Basic June 14 of 2016, so it seems like I may be here a while. Nice to meet everyone.

About Myself

Since my freshman year I've lived in a rural town in southwest Michigan. Before then, however, I never lived in the same spot for much more than a year. I feel like that, in a way, has shaped the way I am today.

I've always been an overweight kid, but about two years ago I decided I needed to make a change. I started out at about 230 pounds, and through a change in diet and a consistent weight training program, have made a ton of progress. Today I stand at 5'11 and weigh 175, give or take a couple pounds. High school sports, specifically baseball, have also helped me along the way. I love the brotherhood and comradery associated with sports, which is one of the biggest reasons I have decided to join the Army.

The APFT I completed today was as follows

2-min Pushups: 56

2-min Sit Ups: 60

2 mile run: 15:58

Pull Ups: 8

I know I have a long way to go, but I'm working hard every single day. Come 10 months I'll be ready to go.

Just an Update.

My most recent APFT is as follows.

2 min push-up: 60
2 min sit-up: 42
2 mile run: 14:48
Pull-up: 12

Since August I have improved on my push-ups and run, but my sit-ups have diminished. This probably due to the inconsistent nature of my workouts. Due to the hectic nature of my schedule, I have to fit them in when I can.

I have had a lot of time on my hands the last couple of weeks, however, and it looks to stay that way, at least until March. I've recently started the APFT Improvement plan that Ranger Silverback had posted in the Fitness thread. I will follow this for the next couple of months and see how it works.

I hope everybody had a great Christmas!

Ranger Jim,

I messaged you several months back that I no longer wanted mentorship from the website, and you confirmed my request. I was under the impression that I was no longer allowed to post on the Mentees thread. I do have more of the tasks completed and saved on my computer if would like to see them.

2 min push-up: 60
2 min sit-up: 65
2 mile run: 14:40

Not great improvements, but here nor there. The nature of the APFT Improvement plan I am following is that it only gets harder as time goes by, so I am confident that I will see improvement eventually.

Several weeks back,in gym class, I ran a mile in 6:24, which just about blew my previous time out of the water. I think I will begin implementing more slow, long distance runs into my routine so that I can keep that pace over 2 miles. Other than that, nothing new to report. Still just trying to keep my grades up and stay out of trouble.

You still have a couple months to improve. Add pull-ups to your workouts and include them in your next PT test results. Never, never quit!

Keep at it, improvement takes time and you just need to keep going. If you put in the work, you will start to notice improvement.

Elijah,

How's your drivers lic issue going? It is my opinion that you do not want to end up "out of state" in the Army without a drivers lic. Stuck on post is cool for about 6 months. potential opportunities to get a Drivers lic could be problematic after you enlist and arrive where ever you end up.

Also how far are you from Battle creek MI?
