Introduction- Quay

Hello Rangers,
My name is Quay and I'm 18. This fall I will be attending the University of Illinois where I will be apart of ROTC. I've known since my sophomore year of High School that I've wanted to join the military but recently I decided on the Regiment. After having a conversation with my uncle, recently retired from SF (Served in Afghanistan), I realized the Regiment would be best for me. He described it simply as, "High Speed". I would love to gain more knowledge(I've done days worth of research but nothing beats getting it from whose been there) , I specifically wanted to ask about the relationship between Officers and Enlisted in the Regiment.

I'm asking how long I would be able to go out and do missions with the enlisted men. I was reading about SF and how officers have about 2 years before they move up into more of planning roles. So I wanted to know if it is the same in the Regiment

I believe I understand your question. I have been retired since 1995 so things may be a little different now, but I don't think that different.

First, to be assigned to Regiment you will have to be a 1ST LT, with Platoon leader time in the regular army, somewhere. Once you are selected for a Platoon Leader slot within the 75th Regiment, you will deploy with your platoon every time they deploy. I have seen Platoon Leaders last anywhere from 1 to 2 years in their position, before they move on to another assignment. I've seen a lot of them return as Company commanders down the road.

This all assumes that you will be an Infantry Officer. Some things may change for another MOS.

If you are an LT in an infantry unit. You will command a platoon and lead it from the day you get there.

Roger RangerJim, I've been doing a lot of research and that was one of the things I couldn't really find anywhere. From talking to my uncle I realize that enlisted aren't always "trusting" of officers in comparison to NCO's, so I'm seeking advice on things I should know that could help me to be the best leader possible.

As a Platoon Leader, if you want your men's respect and trust, be hard and tough, but never mean. Lead by example, but don't think you have to do it all. Be physically fit in all areas, I've seen LT's who could run a marathon, but could not do push-ups, or looked like Arnold, but could not run around the block. Know your job, but don't be afraid to ask questions, when needed. Trust your NCO's, especially your Platoon Sergeant, ask for their opinions, especially when it comes to their men, they know them better than you do. If your men trust and respect you, they will follow to hell and back, just make sure you supply the ice water.
