SGM Bennie G Adkins receives Medal of Honor
(CNN) —As many as 175 enemy troops killed, 18 wounds from enemy fire, 38 hours of battle, 48 hours evading the North Vietnamese troops in the bush -- and one tiger. Those are the numbers behind Sgt. Maj. Bennie Adkins' Medal of Honor, an award he received from President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony Monday.

Has there been any explanation of why it took so long to decide on the award?

Re: MH Recipient killed up to 175 NVA
I noticed that during the ceremony he was wearing the DSC. I would bet that someone made an appeal to upgrade the DSC to MOH. There have been other upgrades based upon a push by witnesses. I know that during Vietnam what award you received was many times affected by the rank of the one submitting the award and in many cases the rank of the one being recommended.
Based upon the description in the award the only question I have is who was pissed off at him at that time. Then again they had 100% casualties; five dead twelve wounded. There might not have been a coherent description of what he did until years later when they might have been able to compare notes.
Bottom line is he got the recognition he deserved. Hopefully he gets all the back pay for MOH.
