If you want Airborne get it in your contract...if you want RASP get it in your contract. I find your desire to earn Airborne/RASP the "old school way" ill-advised, it's a numbers game when you get to Basic and you might end up empty handed. If you're are sure that Airborne School and/or RASP is what you want then ensure that it's in writing. Don't worry you'll have to "earn it" to graduate.

I don't know if it was know as Opt. 40 but I enlisted for Airborne and Ranger specifically and 2nd Batt. Soldiers pre dating me by at least a year maybe two did the same thing.

Can't speak for the other Ranger's but what I'm "telling you" is that it sounds like you're not sure whether or not you have what it takes. Maybe you think that if you don't get it in your contract then later you can use that as an excuse for not making it. We've all heard them "I would have been a Ranger but..." and it's BS! If you actually want to become a Airborne Ranger you put yourself in the best possible position to achieve that goal. The best way is with an Opt 40...but you probably already knew that.

Do you read and comprehend the English language? Yes, that is what everyone is telling you.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the guys who have the experience. Don't try to re-invent the fucking wheel.

That is...if you really want it.

What they're telling you is that if you want to win the Indy 500, you're better off doing it WITH a car as opposed to trying to run it in sneakers and hope that every other car will break down.

You see the point? Yes, it sounds stupid, but so does your question.

See,

I joined the Army, young and dumb... convinced by an Army recruiter that no "Ranger Contracts" were available, and if you want to be a Ranger all you gotta do is sign up "Unassigned Airborne" and you'll get it... trust me.

Trust me... I was really pissed when I heard the the Drill Instructor call out my name and tell me, "Unassigned airborne... KOREA!" I was gunna kill that recruiter when I went home on leave.

I was lucky... Not doing it the "old school way" when in Airborne School this stud in starched BDU's and a black beret walks up to the front of the formation and yells out, "I need a few good men!!" Shit, I was breaking formation before he finished the challenge.

"Old School"?!! Hell, I was lucky. Take the contract and see if you have the mettle. Use the year or two you spend doing it the "old school way" by getting to the 75th sooner than later to learn, shape and master the Ranger way of battle.

Just my thought and opinion based on my experience.
