Introduction- Garrett

Post by GarrettC »

thank you for taking time to read this!

hey I'm Garrett, i'm 17 years old and a senior in highschool. I have been facing some difficult decisions regarding my life these past couple of years, especially the notorious question "what do you want to be when you're grown up?" I can guarantee, where i come from, that over 85% of my class "says" they want to do something in the medical field. Nothing against that profession but when i show up at the 10 year anniversary, i don't wanna be a nurse like everyother person that i know.

Here's where you can help me.
since im only 17 and i have only 3 months of school left! I have been thoroughly examining a military profession as an option. I have already talked to a Marine Corps recruiter, he seemed like a nice guy and he knew what he was talking about; however, he was a little vague when he said Marines are as driven and they are trained as hard as Rangers are. So i sat there smiled and shook my head quietly knowing that his statement was incorrect.

So i did a little more research over the past couple of months and i realized exactly i wanted to do, be apart of The United States Army Rangers my friend.

I haven't talked to an Army recruiter yet but i do plan on doing it sometime soon. I'm curious on how picking you MOS works if you have an"Option 40" in your contract. Like many before me, i want to be a grunt! not because i'm some gun-ho-kill em' all punk that learned everything he knows from Call of Duty games... It's because theres where i feel ill be most effective at serving my country. To my understanding i would choose 11x Option 40...? but how do i know forsure when i graduate from RASP that i'll be an Infantryman in the 75th? because i would be damned if i went through all of that work just to be a food specialist...

anyways in my physical aspect...
i stand about 5'10 152lbs
i can do...
53 push-ups in 1 minute, 75 in 2min
19 pull-ups(wide-grip) in 1 min-
63 sit-ups in 1min, 120 in 2min
2 miles in 14:29

i know i'm not the biggest guy but i'm slowing building up my endurance and overall body strength.
but for being 17 1/3.. that isn't bad right?

anyways enough of me...
please tell me...
what life is like as a Ranger?
how do you communicate with loved ones?
how to stay competitive in Ranger School or RASP?
what was your first mission like as a Ranger?
do you like your job?
was it everything you expected it to be?
*** How to stay moviated while running on a few hours of sleep and 1 meal a day?

Thanks again for reading!!! :D

Garrett, a man has only one opportunity to create a favorable initial impression. You began strong but weakened as you went along. If you truly want to earn a place in the 75th Ranger Regiment, you came to the right site. We take considerabel pride in the fine young men who pass through on their life journey. All the questions you have raised have been addressed before. Please avail yourself the search feature located at the upper right of this page. You do need to do some work on your physical fitness, there is a file on physical readiness on the site that will help you. Take a look at the threads posted by Ranger Nomad. As it looks like you have some time to train yourself prior to your departure for OSUT, let me begin by directing you to the Ranger Creed -- most of us try to continue to live by those words. By the way, I'm 66 years old and I'm still wondering what I want to do when I grow up. Never, never quit!!!

well sorry Zone, i didn't mean it in that way.
i'm saying if i train to be an 11x and end up being something else (just using that MOS as an example) i would be dissapointed. i know this happens to a lot of soldiers and i don't want that to happen to me.

Please pardon my intrusion, but, as far as I have read here, if you get signed on as an 11X, no matter where you go, you are either an 11B or 11C. That being said, if you enlist with an Option 40 in your contract you still stay as whatever you enlisted as (or in the case of every infantryman, an 11B or 11C). Basically if you graduate OSUT as 11B, you are going to go to Airborne and RASP (assuming you pass them) as an 11B.

Also, from one student to another you might want to read these posts.....http://armyranger.com/bb/viewforum.php?f=16" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Garrett,

Welcome to the site. First off, whatever MOS you sign up with will be your basic job, Option 40 or not. Option 40 will get you a guaranteed slot to the selection process to do the job in one of the Ranger Battalions, straight out of AIT. If you go to OSUT at Benning with an 11X contract, you will not magically come out as a combat engineer or supply specialist. However, the military has job slots that need to be filled within an Infantry unit. That unit may push an 11B into it. All my the drivers for my Strykers are 11 Bravos. The company armorer is a PV2 Infantryman as well. Same for the RTO's maintaining the company radios. Expect that throughout your career you won't be always carrying a rifle and kicking in doors, but working to accomplish the mission as part of a team.

My advice for you: Enlist with an Option 40 contract, train hard, and never quit ever.

Before you post again go read te site rules and regs.

Your "buddy" Zone as you saw fit to call him, was an Officer and a Ranger, and as such you will address him accordingly as RangerZoneIV.

This is not Facebook. Situational awareness is your new best friend from here on out. If you don't know what that means, do some research on it.
