I posted my intro first when I registered and then replied to this topic. I think my intro just didn't get pushed through fast enough before my reply to this topic. Sorry bout that.

Napoleon knew that if a company grade officer saw a gap, he needed to go for it. However he also was able to see the enemies larger mistakes at his level, and would counter many of his junior officers decisions, so they could be used in the greater value of flanking actions.
Excellent point. A senior leader has got to focus on the larger picture, visualize what is going on at a much greater scale. Patton, for example, used Michelin road maps, rather than tactical-scale maps to guide his movements across France and Germany.

This is not necessarily true. I have had the honor of serving under more than a few officers that I liked and respected. On the other hand, the ability of an idiot officer to completely fuck up your life as an enlisted soldier is enormous so I would suggest that the bad, stupid, lazy, arrogant dickweed lieutenant who thinks he's the next fucking Rommel gets more attention than the intelligent, fair-minded lieutenant who supports his men and NCOs.

Then again, even good lieutenants often have their "duh" moments due to their inexperience, which can get people killed. For example, my platoon got into a small firefight this last tour in Iraq. I was not near the lieutenant, so after hitting the ground LT. T--- looks directly at SGT B----- and says (no shit) "What's going on? What should we do?" SGT B-----'s response was "I don't know sir. Aren't you supposed to fucking tell me?" Luckily a Staff Sergeant stepped in, took charge and made shit happen and no one was hurt.
