Thanks for the post! I was just in the process of recording a VHS tape to disc of a History Chanel piece on LRRPs.

I believe the Island the narrator refers to in the middle of the sound was or is called " Ghost Island" . After living in that specific area for 15 years I've been to that island alot. Even as a boyscout.

Despite the changes to the training, those viedos bring back some memories.
In 10-81 we hit Santa Rosa Island. I see they paved the road for the return to camp. It was sand and one tough slog back then from the assult but at some point we were met by duce and half's and trucked back in.
We used night vision devices in 10-81. It was a short, fat single lens thing that you looked thru like a telescope; can't remember the designation (PV-2?). Worked about half of the time if you had good batteries but it was high speed for then; my first experience with night vision.
I didn't see any mention of commo gear in the story. We had these small pieces of crap radios for inter-squad communication that we clipped and taped on our LBE shoulder harness. They didn't work about 99% of the time. Each patrol also had PRC-77. I don't remember having TA 312, DR8 or stringing wire which was mentioned in different thread.

Re: U.S. Army Ranger School (Videos)
Now I remember the PVS-2s, they were big heavy bastards! I was on the defense on Santa Rosa Island. My Ranger Buddy and I dug a two man fighting position with our canteen cups on top of one of the sand dunes. We put our M-16s on the bottom then squatted down and fell asleep in the hole. It's one thing to be caught asleep, it's another to have your weapon taken away from ya!
No one noticed we were gone and we didn't wake up until the star clusters were going off during the assault!

Re: U.S. Army Ranger School (Videos)
Just watched the videos yesterday. One of my RI's from Florida was doing flutter kicks in the first or second video. We used ASIP's to talk to higher and MBITR's for internal communication.

asips....mbitrs....damn...that would've made rucks a lot lighter. we got the big heavy 119's that never worked and of course it was always our faults...haha. no santa rosa raid for us....hurrican dennis destroyed the island when we were in mountains. i do gotta admit though, that video is pretty accurate.LEROY wrote:Just watched the videos yesterday.
