Not sure about this stuff, but check out the liquid body armor concept involving colloidal suspensions. Basically it would mean completely flexible body armor that would stop bullets on impact.
You can start to get an idea of how it works if you have ever done the kid's science experiment with corn starch & water.

Well it sounds like the science worked perfectly then.
