Prior Service Marine Going Officer

Post by Charlemagne »

I am a 27 year old Prior Service enlisted Marine going to Officer Candidate School in September. I am trying to branch Infantry. I am just wondering what would be the best route to take in regards to becoming an officer in one of the Ranger Battalions. I am figuring that my best bet is to be the class honor graduate at OCS and be the stud at Ranger School and the Infantry Officers Course. Any helpful info would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

First off, take OCS very seriously. While not too physically demanding, there is a strong mental, and I don't mean academic, aspect to the course, particularly for prior service types. Strive to place as high on the OML by week 6 as possible. At the end of week 6, your class will choose their branches in OML order. Once branched Infantry, take onus of your new found status and learn as much of FM 3-21.8 and the RHB as you can. Although you won't have a lot of free time, take advantage of what time you do have to PT on your own...this doesn't involve going to the gym to work chest and bi's 5 times a week. Run, ruck, core work, intervals, etc...

As far as service in the 75th as a Lieutenant, you are only eligible to apply after you have served with a conventional unit first. Keep in mind, you are looking at roughly two years at a time serving with the Regiment as an Officer....oh, and uh, post an intro.

Before you do anything else including reply to this thread you need to go post an introduction in the appropriate forum.

I took the liberty of moving your thread to the introduction forum. It is our policy that the first entry will be in the introduction thread; after all isn't introducing yourself the first thing everyone does. Please tell us more about yourself in this thread.

There are many former officers on this site that an help you out. From my experience of Battalion life in the mid 80's, I only saw one 2nd LT. assigned to Batt. All platoon leaders were 1st LT's. They had all commanded a rifle platoon in another unit before coming to Battalion.
