Introduction

Post by HNM »

Rangers,

First off, thank you all for your service. My name is Hunter and I am 17 years old. I have been in the process of enlisting in the Army since June 2009. It took quite a while to get all my medical paperwork sent up and approved. In October I was told that I was good to go and went up to MEPS for my physical. During my interview with the MEPS doctor he saw that I had possible acid reflux in 2004 and said I would need a waiver to join the Army. Because I have a medical waiver, I cannot get my airborne stamp and cannot recieve the Opt. 40 contract I was hoping for. I recently met a former Ranger who told me not to accept anything other than a RIP contract, however with this medical waiver, it seems I won't have that luxury. My recruiter told me my best bet was to take 11x and volunteer for Airborne during OSUT, so he and I pulled my job two days ago and I am scheduled to DEP in 20091205 as 11x. I have been training for 3 years now with the goal of joining the Army and earning the Ranger Scroll and Ranger Tab. Although not what I had hoped for, I am willing to enlist 11x and earn the Tan Beret later in my career if that is my only option.

Thank you for your time Rangers,
Hunter

Welcome to the site, Hunter. I have no idea what specific medical problems will exclude you from an Option 40 contract. I would certainly get another opinion. If "possible" acid reflux does in fact keep you from securing one, I would sure shine in OSUT. If you excell in everything, there is a chance that your Drill Sgt.s can hook you up with an Airborne slot. Good luck.

Ranger EarthPig:
The medical paperwork my recruiter sent to MEPS included a time when I was seen for getting sick. The test I had concluded that the problem "might have been caused from acid reflux but tests showed very minor, otherwise normal" results. I got mulitple notes from my, and other doctors saying I did not and do not have acid reflux however, the MEPS doctor had made his decision. I do not believe it is the acid reflux stopping me from the RIP contract, just the medical waiver in general is stopping me from being airborne qualified. I just plan on putting out at OSUT and hoping for the best. Thank you for your advice Ranger EarthPig.

Welcome and good luck to you with "luck" meaning preparedness meeting opportunity. In your case you have to prepare yourself and become among the very top performers in everything during OSUT. Only in that way will you ever get the opportunity. You have to make your own luck. Others have.

Rangers,
I just got back from MEPS. I was scheduled to do height/weight and swear in. When I got ready to meet with the counselor I told him I wanted to renegotiate my 11x contract and I wanted to add airborne and RIP. He told me I was a no go unless I could talk the doc into giving me my airborne stamp with a waiver. So I went to medical and met with doc who told me 3 times I was a no go for airborne because of my "acid reflux" waiver. I stayed polite but direct and told him it was a one time thing and never took and meds for it so he said alright and gave me an airborne stamp. After that I went back to the counselor and got an 11x Opt. 40 contract and swore into DEP. However, when my recruiter picked me up he was shocked that I got it. He said that there is a good chance that when it comes time to ship (20100705) that the doc may see that I'm a waiver and pull my airborne and RIP from my contract. Does anyone know how likely this is?
Thank you Rangers for your time,
Hunter

Roger that Ranger Bravo 57 and Ranger ZoneIV:
I just wanted to clear that up and make sure MEPS docs wouldn't try to dick me around again when it came time to ship. Now the hard part begins!
