New Book

Post by insidecntr »

Rangers,

Has anyone read the new book Where Men Win Glory, By Jon Krakauer? He's the same Author who wrote Into the Wild and Into Thin Air. It's biography/case study type of look at his life, his time as a Ranger, and the details surrounding his death. I'm about half way through it, it's a pretty good read. Ranger Tillman was a fascinating man.

I read it. We have some folks here that helped Mr. Krakauer write it.

No need to bite your tongue. It's just a fact that when it comes to Ranger historical events, chances are a member of this site was a first hand participant. That's what makes this place so prescient.

Shit, Rock Island Ranger was part of Robert Roger's St. Francis Raid. Look it up. :)

Ranger .,

I finished Where Men Win Glory today and found it to be both a well-written book and a rewarding read. Krakauer always tends to focus on individuals who remain outside the norm in regards to their moral convictions as well as their life choices, and Tillman was one such man. We have all heard about his deciding to leave the NFL to enlist, but I was not aware that before he had made this decision, he had given up a much more lucrative contract with the Rams to remain in Arizona and make league minimum. His loyalty to those he cared for (extending even to NFL coaches and the Cardinals) blew me away. Also surprising was his decision not to opt out of the Army after his first deployment, as he could have done. Krakauer says that Tillman "hated being in the Army", but nonetheless did not consider asking for an early discharge because it would have violated the commitment he had promised to fulfill. He had grown disillusioned after his deployment to Iraq, and would have loved to return to football, but he couldn't do it. Few people place honesty and their word above immediate desires and wants. Tillman was the exception to that rule.

As far as the mishandling of his death goes, it seems that the author did thorough research regarding the subject. It appears to me that the issues were the result of a combination of negligence, and probably to an extent, a political cover-up. It is a shame that his family was subjected to such treatment, and that his fellow Rangers became unwilling participants in the "scandal". However, I only can speak as an outsider on the subject, and claim no legitimate opinion on the matter. I really don't know shit other than what I read.

All in all, great book. Tillman is a fine example of a man and an inspiration. Krakauer's book does service to the fallen Ranger his family.
