Hello Rangers and Forum Members,

Sorry for the long drought of fun facts of the day (to those who actually read them), there's been a TON of shit going on at the Academy over the past month. We have Recognition coming up tomorrow through Saturday, and the entire school has been getting pumped for it. Recognition is just three days of beatings (USAFA's endearing term for physical training) that ends with all the Four Degrees (freshman, that's me!) getting "recognized" as a upperclassmen, giving us the same privileges as them (such as music, movies, civilian clothes, can wear backpacks on our backs again, don't have to run everywhere, etc.). Additionally, I received a pretty nasty concussion from rugby a week ago, which was messing with me for a bit. Just got cleared for Recognition after getting a CT Scan over at Fort Carson. You Army boys know how to do the whole doctor stuff right! Anyway, after Recognition I'll start posting again. Hopefully all is well with you and yours.

I take it you are not referring to the doc that prescribed me some shit in Afghanistan that severely dehydrated me overnight (technically over-"day"; was on nightshift) to the point of passing out during a surprise formation my sergeant woke me up for? They pumped 4 bags into me. Later that day I went back, and a different doc snatched the meds away from me, exclaiming, "These should NEVER be prescribed in a desert environment!"

I am now posting as a Recognized Cadet in case anyone is curious.

Interesting Fact of the Day: It is common mistake to say that The Great wall of China is visible from outer space. It is too thin to be noticed from such a great distance. Only two man made structures are visible from space: The Pyramids of Giza and the Hoover Dam.
Fun Fact of the Day: A baboon called Jackie became a private in the South African army in World War I.
Not So Interesting Fact: A chicken is 75% water.

Corny Joke of the Day: What did the vampire say to the clown?... Something tastes funny!

This is a rumor that came about because the first Chinese astronaut couldn't spot the wall. I believe John Glen stated shortly thereafter something to the effect of, "You can see it; you just got to know where to look!" There may also be an issue of haze due to Chinese industry that wasn't there during the 1960's.

Also, with some quick math, the Great Wall would appear to be 2 to 5 arcseconds thick at the shuttle's orbit. With a little googling...the star with the largest apparent diameter (not including the sun) is R Doradus at 0.057 arcseconds.

This would lend support to being able to see the Great Wall from space, if it is a clear day and you know where to look.

I like the debate regarding the authenticity of the Great Wall statement, but I personally couldn't see it from what I perceived to be a spacey distance on that website. Who knows how true any of these are, I just copy and paste.... 8)

Interesting Fact of the Day: The name Wendy was made up for the book "Peter Pan."
Fun Fact of the Day: The Sanskrit word for "war" means "desire for more cows."
Not So Interesting Fact: The blesbok, a South African antelope, is almost the same color as grape juice.

Corny Joke of the Day: Why did Smokey the Bear never have children?... Because whenever she got all hot for him he covered her in dirt and hit her with a shovel!
