I told my grandfather about how I want to be a Ranger, so he asked for some advice form his cousin who was or is an officer for the Ranger (NAME REMOVED). He replied with an email that lists a possible route for me to get in that would work with my poor eyesight. Here is an excerpt form the email that explains the process:
"...I would recommend the Guard to get basic training, airborn, and ranger.Go to college and join the ROTC. He could apply for an ROTC scholarship that will offset costs. This buys four plus years and [he can] review eye surgery at that time. If you consider the technological improvements of the last few years, he may be able to have eye surgery sooner. With the commision, then seek Infantry branch and after initial assignment request special ops."
Is this plausible? And also if any Rangers on this sight have met him and have some informatino about him, that would be appreciated as well.

Re: possible recruitment process
I'm just a stupid private, but I think the medical (eyesight) reqs. for enlisted personnel is the same for commissioned. So joining the guard w/ opt. 40 would make you a Ranger without having to go infantry and request spec. ops., you'd just have to re-enlist and go to OCS. If you couldn't get opt. 40 in your enlistment contract because you are disqualified from airborne because of your eyesight then you might be able to get a waiver after you've enlisted or get the corrective surgery courtesy of the taxpayer. As for going infantry, I know some pretty high-speed people that are infantry and are re-classing as medics so that they have a better opportunity of even going to RIP because they couldn't get in as 11Bs. Uncle Sam needs straight-leg infantry too and your commander might not let you go when you apply for a reassignment. Or so I've heard.
That's why I want to get Airborne and RIP in my contract, so I know it's going to happen. You'll learn once you're in, if it's not in writing it might as well not exist.

Re: possible recruitment process
Yes it is plausible.
GoBlackBears: There are no National Gaurd Option 40 enlistments.

Re: possible recruitment process
You sure he's a Major?
Majors don't recruit Joes. They are usually in specialized recruiting like Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers or Chaplains. Even then, MAJ's are rare. Usually a BQ Captain.
The only reason I could see a MAJ even being involved in something like this is the occasional company commander, Bn XO or S-3 of a recruiting battalion. It still would not be him writing the contract though.
