Huge ice sheet breaks loose in Canadian arctic

TORONTO - A chunk of ice shelf nearly the size of Manhattan has broken away from Ellesmere Island in Canada's northern Arctic, another dramatic indication of how warmer temperatures are changing the polar frontier, scientists said Wednesday.

Derek Mueller, an Arctic ice shelf specialist at Trent University in Ontario, told The Associated Press that the 4,500-year-old Markham Ice Shelf separated in early August and the 19-square-mile shelf is now adrift in the Arctic Ocean.

Tit for tat. For every story of ice melting, there is another of ice growing. For example, in the Antarctic the ice has grown 35%.

It should be noted that arctic ice has only been measured by NASA since 1980. So when the first story says that ice there is an all time low, it means it is an all time low since 1980. The hottest recorded temperatures were in the middle ages. That is recorded, and that is long before the newest global warming craze (changed to "climate change" since the earth quit getting hotter about a decade ago).

After NASA admitted the big fuck up with their posted temperatures a year ago, the hottest temperatures recorded in the last 100 years is not the 1980s or 90s, it is in the 1930s and 40s.

Global warming theory has lost ground in the scientific community, so much so that the fanatics are now comparing those who don't believe in it anymore, the same as holocaust deniers.

On a historical note, when and why did the global warming scare start? When I was in junior high school the scare at the time was that there would be a coming ice age, and the "leading experts" at that time contemplated putting soot on the polar ice caps to warm them up.

Where did the Global Warming scare start? In the late 1950s Roger Revelle, an American professor of ocean sciences, rediscovered an 1896 article by an obscure Swedish scientist, Svante Arrhenius. His theory was that a doubling of CO2 in the atmosphere would trap enough heat energy to boost the earth's average temperature 6 degrees centigrade. So in 1958 Revelle decided to directly monitor carbon dioxide on Mauna Loa in Hawaii. Al Gore was a student of Revelle.

In 1988 during a dramatic heat wave Al Gore's committee on Science was holding hearings on the weather. James Hansen, director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, testified that he was 99 percent certain that the temperature had increased. He also said that there was some greenhouse warming. He did not connect the two observations, did not assert that one caused the other. Despite the fact that those remarks were virtually meaningless, they led the environmental advocacy movement to adopt the issue immediately. A cause was born.

In early 1989 Al Gore's Committee pressed on, pressuring researchers to conform to the global warming theory. Reviewers of scientific literature that dared a contrary analysis implied they were dangerous to humanity. The polar icecaps WERE going to melt; the seas were GOING to rise; the was GOING to breed violent weather! Stephen Schneider, a scientist who once predicted the early ice age in the 1970s, said "We have to offer up scary scenarios, make simplified, dramatic statements, and make little mention of any doubts we might have...Each of us has to decide what the right balance is between being effective and being honest."

In the summer of 1989 Robert Redford hosted a meeting at his ranch, during which he proclaimed that it was time to stop research and begin acting. Barbara Streisand personally undertook to support the research of Michael Oppenheimer at the Environmental Defense Fund, Meryl Streep made an appeal on public television to stop warming. The craziness had begun. Al Gore said that unless steps were taken to stop a buildup of greenhouse gases the world would experience an "environmental holocaust." In his book "Earth in the Balance" Al Gore proposes a "Marshall plan for the environment" which would require a mind-boggling, and undemocratic international command and control system.

In a dramatic contrast, Dr. Revelle, Gore's old teacher, before his death co-authored a paper with Fred Singer and Chauncy Starr recommending that any action on global warming be delayed because current knowledge was totally inadequate. "The scientific base for a greenhouse warming is too uncertain to justify drastic action at this time," he wrote. Al Gore says that the views of skeptical scientists "should not be given equal weight with the consensus now emerging in the scientific community about the gravity of the danger we face." Paying too much attention to the doubters "undermines the effort to build a solid base of public support for the difficult action we must soon take."

The president and Al Gore brought TV weathermen to the White House in the 1990s from all across America and proceeded to indoctrinate them with the Clinton-Gore line on global warming, which they were implored to report to their viewers as fact when they got back home.

I know one thing and that is every year in the mountains of Greece there is less and less snow. We are going to run out of drinking water before you know it. If it doesn't snow this winter we will be in trouble.

In other areas the perma frost has been melting since last year. Like the Alps and the Andes. The perma frost in the Alps is melting!

There are glaciers that are millions of years old that are melting in the Andes.

In the end it's the lack of drinking water which comes from snow and ice that will get us.

I'm the type that will see it snowing again before I change my mind.

In high school in the U.S. in the 70's it snowed for 4 to 5 months. Since the 80's and until now it will snow for a few days (storm) then melt.

I think my favorite piece of evidence that this is NOT a man-made phenomenon is the fact that there is "global warming" on Mars. So maybe we should stop calling it "Global Warming" and start calling it "Galactic Warming".

As far as the drinking water goes, this is a problem in all parts of the world, and always has been. I recently spoke with a guy who works for the USGS, and he told me rather bluntly that anyone living West of the Mississippi is going to have real water problems in the not too distant future. It seems that the aquifers out West can't sustain the massive population growth.

I don't think that the lack of water is due to global warming, which I am sceptical about, but due to more people. There have been times that were much worse, such as during the Depression when the dust bowl was created across the west.

Folks, who used to live outside of places such as deserts and such, have now moved into it and created thriving cities. Las Vegas is an example of this. Vegas should not exist, but it does, and it sits in the desert. To feed this huge city requires a massive amount of water.

Another example is Atlanta. It takes water that others downstream state they should have. So water is not just a huge issue outside of the US, it also is a huge political issue west of the Rockies.

When it doesn't snow we almost run out of water. the last two years it only snowed a few times and this year if it doesn't snow we are in trouble.

Traditionally we have lots of snow in the mountains and an abundant water supply. Call what you want Cosmic warming or cooling but if it doesn’t snow again we will be in trouble.

Las Vegas is an example of this. Vegas should not exist, but it does, and it sits in the desert. To feed this huge city requires a massive amount of water.

I put in some of the new water lines to feed Vegas from 99-03.

In 99, I worked on a new pumping station for Lake Mead. The Discovery Channel did a special on it. It was an amazing endeavor. Then when we had the first AR get together outside of Vegas, some of us saw the result. The lake was much smaller. I used to go boating on Mead quite a bit in the late 90's.

If youve never seen the lake, it's fucking huge. Due to the population growth of Vegas, the water level had dropped some 150 ft. They do not intend of letting the levels go back up, because it would be impossible due to the amount of water usage.

That pumping station, which cost the taxpayers 10's of millions, is totally worthless now. The island on which it sits, Saddle Island, is totally dry. It's not even an Island anymore.

There is a statistic somewhere that shows that 70% of the drinking water used in this country goes to water lawns.
