Nobody has mentioned Kenneth Roberts, author of "Northwest Passage".
He also wrote "Oliver Wiswell" (account of American revolution from the Loyalist point of view) "Rabble In Arms" (revolution from colonial point of view) "Arundel", "The Lively Lady" (name of a ship, not a hooker) "Lydia Bailey" (describes how Haiti has been a shithole for over 200 years)
Also C.S. Forster, author of the Horatio Hornblower novels.
Steinbeck
Twain
Frederick Forsyth
Len Deighton
Goethe
Dr. Bernard Fall (an early authority on French Indochina & VN, KIA 1967)
Michael Connelly
Stephen Hunter
William Buckley (the Blackford Oakes novels)

"The Stainless Steel Rat" Series
"Bill, The Galactic Hero" first two books in the series, before he farmed the series out.
Old series', but worth going to the used bookstore and picking up. I read them in the 80's and picked up a few before I came back to AF. I had forgot how much I enjoyed them.

Hmmm, it seems we agree on books too, Pastor ?!Rock Island Ranger wrote:I read everything I can put my hands on. Just read "The Jerico Sanction" by Oliver North....pretty decent fiction. Not only can the boy fight and stand by his President...half decent writer. Clive Cussler puts out a good read. Steven Coonts, Larry McMurtry, all good. Louis Lamour all time best ever.
Several Cusslers, Lamour and McMurtry books on my shelves.
Lonesome Dove is the best movie of all time.
Haven't read Coonts, bit I liked early Stephen King (before his liberal lobotomy).
Another good author, or so I've been told by my son and other half: R.A. Salvatore and the "Forgotten Realms" series.
To be loved is to be fortunate, but to be hated is to achieve distinction.

I like R.A. Salvatore also, but I think I burned myself out on him.
Books started sounding all the same, but I really enjoyed reading them, he paints a picture with his words and it is easy to see as you read.

Anyone in Riyadh in the mid-'90's? The library in Eskan Village had the whole Casca set. If I wasn't such an honest fucker, I would have stole them all and mailed them home.Parabellum wrote:Barry Sadler
