Iowa and Hurricane Katrina

Post by rgrokelley »

I have seen several comparisons to Hurricane Katrina in the last few days. For example this headline from the Chicago Sun-Times:

Iowa's Katrina

http://www.suntimes.com/news/nation/100 ... 14.article

However I have noticed that no one is shooting at the rescue helicopters. There isn't mass looting. No one fled to the local stadium and commenced to reverting to dark age standards. None sat on their incredibly fat ass waiting for the government to rescue them, and then bitching about it when they finally did.

Will there still be folks from Des Moines living in hotels 3 years later, not bothering to look for a job because it is "too hot" or they are "too tired"

I experianced katrina first hand and live in Omaha now. I have to say some comparisons are close but for the most part way off. yes many many homes are distroyed but thousands died in Katrina. it was also 100 degrees in Mississippi after katrina with no electricity and no water for over a week and this was where lived in Hattiesburg Ms 100 miles from any flooding. Whereas it is about 75 in Omaha now I am not sure how many tornados toughed down in this recent batch of storms 4 of 5 i think. our small city of about 70,000 had 10 in just a few hours. but in reality it fucking suck no matrter which storm you are in

It's definitely a mess here in Cedar Rapids. My house went underwater up to the first floor but I got everything worth of value out or put onto the second floor. So far no one has been allowed in to my neighborhood so I'm not sure what the damage is. The city isn't handling the "PR" very well about the whole situation and has been breaking into homes with what they call "strike teams" to deem the house safe before they allow people back in. They are going to have to bring in the ram to get into my door as they are heavy oak with heavy duty bolts. It pisses me off that joe shitbag now can sneak into the neighborhood and gain access to my house.
