Good Evening Rangers and DEP’ers,
My name’s Patrick and I’m currently 16(17 in June) and a junior in high school (Maryland). It wasn’t until about 6 months ago that I truly realized that I will be an Army Ranger when I get out of high school. Due in part by having both of my parents C.W.O’s in the U.S. Navy, and obviously a significant degree of influence nearly made me go down the wrong path... Everyone has their own personal reasons for enlisting, and mine remains just that – personal, but nonetheless the motivator for me to work towards the only career I will ever respect myself for undertaking. I have an ~9 months until I can ship out for boot camp (I have done very well in school, and I will be allowed to skip a semester of my senior year), and my PT scores are pitiful, but inevitably will go up with how much effort I’m putting into this.
I feel it conducive to career choice to be at the gym *every* morning at 05:00 and do a variety of routines (I may need assistance on them, and I’ll PM my routines/diets to anyone willing to help) that keeps me there till 06:30. I’m also at the gym every day after school from 15:00 till 16:30.
Height: 5’5
Weight: 165
Pt scores 3 months ago-
2 minute Push up – 63
2 minute Sit up – 76
1 mile – 9:30
Pull up- 2
You have to start somewhere, right?
Pt Scores as of this morning
2 minute Push up – 92
2 minute sit up – 105
1 mile – 7:45
Pull ups- 5
I’m not satisfied with any of that, and I have no worthwhile excuse other than the generic “I have schoolâ€

Welcome to the site. Reading between the lines, I gather you have not enlisted yet and are begining the process. Be sure your contract includes Option 40. You have plenty of time to improve your PT and expecially your running. Army standards are a two-mile run, so begin working on that. Check out the threads in the About Army Physical Training forum for good information about physical fitness improvement. Good luck to you, with luck meaning preparedness meeting opportunity. Be sure to read the ROE PM I have sent you.

Rangers -
Sorry for the delayed response, but I have been pulling 18 hour or all nighters for the past couple days ( and for the next couple days ) for studying for my AP exam, and had to contemplate a reasonable answer.
Since a couple of you have asked, I'll explain a little of why I want to be a Ranger . Though I regret I will not explain my childhood in detail, I'll explain a few aspects that keep me going.
I have gone through school with exceptional ease, even being in MENSA and all of the other programs that somehow deem you "smart". That being said, my mother/grandmother/grandfather ( I do not live with them anymore ) used to lay into me with full out beatings if I did something to embarrass them in any way. It is funny what alcohol does to someone's priorities -- and so if I didn't have straight A's, or I didn't do something worthwhile that allowed them brag in front of their friends, or make them somehow believe them they had a little less power than they did, I got the "character" beat into me. This went on for 5 years of constant humiliation in front of my peers at school because of my mother being friends with several teachers. The few teachers helped put in with the social aspect, constantly giving anything they can to punish me for stories my mother told.
Ever since I got out of there ( I revolted ... brutally ), I have found life almost too easy to cope with, and I have found myself pushing the limits of how much I can take before I fold. The Rangers offer me the ability to test that, and push well beyond that in any aspect. I haven't explain 1/10th of my childhood, but you can see it was harder than most kids peewee football times, and I can take much more mental abuse than Any of my peers.
Sorry for poor grammar atm, but my mind if fried.

I work out with a friend of mine in the mornings and we went to my school track field and he timed me with a stop watch. I'm trying to push my 1 mile down to 6 minutes or so , and by then I would hope that my 2 mile could be a bit better. Though I feel as if I hit a wall because I need to lose some more weight before I will run much faster, and so I'm walking at 4.2 MPH ( I'm 5'5 , it's fast for me atm ) for about 45 minutes every few days on top of my regular routine.Who's grading your PT test?
I really wish that was an option for me, but sadly there is no pool near my house that isn't restricted to College enrollees or the people living in the apartment complexes.I suggest finding a pool and working that into your routine.
Sorry for poor grammar atm, but my mind if fried.
Good evening Rangers,
Its been a while since I have posted on here, and wished to update you guys on what I'm currently doing (with the goal of obtaining advice).
I turned 17 June 24, and my recruiter picked me up to do the ASVABs. Once we were done I was given a ton of paperwork to fill out, including : Parental consent form/security clearance form/ medical release form (for the physical at MEPS). The initial score I was given was 78, but supposedly all of the tests are gone over by hand to weed out any Scantron mistakes, so that is subject to change.
As it stands, I am waiting for the parental consent form to be signed by my mother and then I will be going to a hotel on Monday (June 30th) to get a physical on Tuesday at MEPS. I have been very upfront and respectful with my recruiters whenever my contract comes up, and that I will not accept anything less than 11x Option 40 with full benefits. I asked my recruiter about anything he can do to help and he told me that he will reserve my 11x Option 40 contract in the station before we leave.
At the moment it seems to me that there are no problems holding me back from becoming a Ranger, but I am not signing myself away without making sure experienced people have overlooked it. Especially when my recruiter has already told me that no one has ever come to him about being an Army Ranger before, and whenever I'm in the station it seems to me as if I'm the one who should be answering questions (Thanks to the Rangers/Moderators on this website).
-------------------------------------------------------------
Physically I can see a ton of progress every week in seeing fat turn to muscle (pictures if it helps), but I haven't gone for 2 mile runs all that often to see number increases...
My workout for the next 65 days
* My car blew up so I'm riding my bike 10 miles each way to the gym to do this every day
Day 1 -
Bench press
Machine Bench Press Sit and Press forward)
Butterfly machine
Cable Crossover
Hammer Press
Side Ways Hammer Press (inner chest workout)
Barbell Shrug
Free weight -biceps/forearms
Stick and string forearm exercise (Pull weight up by turning stick with forearms)
Tricep pullup
Sit up Machine
Ab Crunch Machine - until I can't do anymore
Day 2 -
Squats
Leg Press- 50 reps at half weight
Leg Extension machine
Calv machine (lay down on stomach and pull bar with heels to your butt)
Calv Press
Ab Crunch Machine - 50 straight until I can't do anymore
Day 3 -
44 mile bike ride
Diet-
Breakfast: Raisin bran cereal/water/fruit of some kind
Lunch: Tuna on wheat bread + a little mayo (because it tastes like shit)/Milk/Fruit of some kind
Dinner: Generally it is not up to me, but I try to limit what I eat to turkey on wheat bread/water.
*Whey Protein Shake in mornings
* 6-7 16 FL oz of water periodically throughout the day
Weight: 160-165 -- it seems to change every day
Height: 5'5
Age:17
While this is geeky, doing my math over 65 days, I can at least get to a physical state that is respectable and capable of doing a lot more than the bare minimums.
29 miles a day in biking = ~ 1450 calories
Not including the gym/added miles on day 3
1450 * 65 = 94250
94250/3500(calories per lb of fat) = 27 lbs of fat
This is of course assuming it is 100% fat loss, and not adding in a calorie deficit ( 60% is the realistic fat per lb loss, which would be 17 lbs). I also do not need to be that skinny, because it would probably be unhealthy for me.
Thanks in advance and for reading the lengthy post.

Whoa - whoa - whoa ! BEEP BEEP BEEP ! Back the truck up.
Slow down, wild man. All this reading is driving my mind bonkers !
Work on your PT, yes. I fully agree. It needs it ! But stop posting like a wildman possessed !
If you have not done so, go to the Mentor room and request a Mentor so he can square your ass away.
In the mean time, listen, read, do PT, and SHUT UP. After that, do more PT.
That is all.

Good evening Rangers,
I had a mix up with some forms and got my processing date changed, but it is all good now. I went in and let the old guy fondle my balls in exchange for my contract, and I now have my **11x Option 40**. I ship out June 8th, 2009 at the moment, but I have a letter from my school allowing me to graduate a semester early which will let me ship from the nearing available date beyond January 16th.
Just a tip for any other people looking to join, if the liason tries giving you shit about not having your 11x Option 40, tell him to call "The Roc". It is basically a place based out of Texas that has more options than they do, and the liasons are expecting you not to know that. It will let the Councilor that you have done your homework and are worth spending time on, on a Friday at 4 Pm the day before a holiday break.
My conversation went like this:
Councilor: Good morning <me>
Me: Good morning sir
Councilor: What would you like to do in the Army?
Me: Airborne Ranger sir
Councilor (after a couple of minutes): It appears there are no slots available, would you like to pick another job ?
Me: No sir, but I would like you to call Roc and see what they can do for me.
Suddenly the winds changed and within a minute and a half (phone call), my contract appeared on the screen.

Congratulations for enlisting and for getting an 11X Option 40 contract. You have all the time you need to become a PT stud and to get your mind ready for what's ahead. That time will go by quicker than you think, so take advantage of it.
