Holy crap the GI bill is up to $70,000?
Can anyone confirm that if you have not used your GI bill yet ( Yeah I know, I am hoping to start soon..stupid job takes up so much time!) that it increases to the current until you actually start to use it?
For example when I first enlisted I opted for the $30,000 for college so that when I got out ( be it after my first contract was up, or if i stayed in for 20) I was planning on college when i got out. I was told that if I didn't use it, then that 30K would go up with the current until I first used it. Can anyone confirm this?

Stickman, that's actually out of my professional realm but I could try and find out. It's more a VA issue.
I will tell you that I ETS'd after Desert Storm and my MGIB/ACF which was originally $25k was bumped up to $28k for whatever reason.

The combination of the GI Bill AND Army College Fund is up to 70K.
the GI bill alone is around 50K. if you don't have the college fund, you don't get it now.
However, you GI bill DOES increase to the new amount. so if you got 15K when you joined (example) you still get about 50K now.

Thank you Ranger gpatmac and SFC Hit_it. I know I have the GI bill and I do not recall if i have the army college fund ( i thinkI do) but will have to check my DD214 when I get home :)
Too bad i couldn't just " withdraw" it all, pay off bills and then use the rest for college

Stickman,
I used all of my GI Bill after I got out in 97. Whenever you start using it you are payed at whatever the current rate happens to be. The rate increases every Oct. with the new fiscal year. When I started going to school in 97 it was about $600 full-time and when I finished up my MPA in 2002 I was getting nearly $900. Hope that helps.

When I originally DEPed in back in June of '07 the MGIB was the only college related assistance I had and my bonus was only 9K. Since then I have read about the Army College Fund on this forum and that the Army will now give an individual 1K per month while in DEP.
My question is if the ACF is used in lieu of a signing bonus or if I can have both, and if I would be grandfathered in for the new bonus incentive. My Recruiter said it would be no to both, but I wanted a "second opinion" to say just to be 100% sure if it is or is not possible to have this added to my contract.
Respectfully,

The comment you're responding to was posted in 2005. I imagine there's a better than even chance some of this info has changed.Namechanger wrote:SFC Hit_it,hit_it wrote:The combination of the GI Bill AND Army College Fund is up to 70K.

The reason I responded to this thread was for the reason that this is the thread I found through the search page and the topic pertained to the main point of my question. I used the thread as to not have to start a new one but to build on an existing one. Using this existing thread may also have helped my question make more understandable to the Rangers or other individuals who read it and not make it seem a random statement. When I originally posted in this thread I did realize that it was from 2005 and there was a good chance the info changed, but I was unable to find a more recent thread pertaining to this matter.

The proper response would be, "Roger Ranger Invictus."
