Before you read this, be aware....I am NOT moaning about my time in green kit, I had a grand old time when I was in.
I was wondering if the US and foreign recruiters are similar to their British counterparts.
I mean are they a bunch of lying b@st@rds?
I went into the careers office, did the medical, aptitude, etc etc. Managed to do very well (yes I was surprised too).
When I filled in the rain forest of paperwork, I had to indicate three choices for my desired Regiment/Corps.
I put down for The Intelligence Corps, The Army Air Corps, and The Parachute Regiment.
The Sgt dealing with my case was from Royal Artillery (you can already see where this is going), he gave me the good news...I could apply for any job open to an OR (other rank=enlisted man) in the army.
Short version Int Corps-9 month waiting list, Air Corps, 6 months waiting list, The Paras...oh mate a skinny little lad like you? You’ll have a helluva time getting through…never mind the 6 month waiting list, due to the sheer amount of nails blokes trying to get in....we had three guys in here last year...all marathon runners, they all failed etc etc.
Oh…do you have any suggestions?
Well, The Gunners have slots for seismologists starting end of the month.
They do?
And they have para/commando/SF assets as well.
They do?...erm OK I try that fella then.
Fast forward to Woolwich Barracks.
What’re you here for?
Gunner Tech-seismology.
What???
errrr...Gunner Tech-seismology.
What the f***in’ ‘ell is one of them? You got gunner-weapons, gunner-driver or gunner-signals…What one is you?
wanna be a seismologist...mumble mumble.
Blur of movement…slap….OW!
Get over there pondlife. You’re a f***in’ signaller, cos’ you clearly can’t f***in’ hear properly!
My long to get to and laboured point is this.
When you joined, did the recruitment office use “artistic licenceâ€

I don't think it happens as much as it used to. Now it's more likely for them to leave things out then throw out total lies. I'm not saying it never happens. But I haven't heard a story of a guy getting lied to about his job in some time. The US Army prides itself in having so many different career opportunities for soldiers that they are part of the selling point. They will tell you how you can't get jump school slots, Ranger ect. Most of which isn't true. They are just trying to avoid work.
If you search this site you'll find plenty of people who initially went to sign up and they were told no to certain things. But I don't know how many stories you'll see like yours. Again, not that it never happens... But it's pretty rare.
