Everyone likes getting mail, right?

Post by hargrave86 »

A friend of mine is over in Iraq and I've been meaning to send him a care package, but I have no idea what to send him and I don't want send a bunch of crap he has no use for. Any suggestions as to what would be good to send to a soldier in the box?

Christmas, 1967, I was at a fire support base in War Zone C, when I received a care package from some Catholic Nuns from Maryland.

Included were ten packages of pre-sweetened Kool-aid, two cans of Vienna sausages, some broken cookies, six pairs of athletic socks that had been died OD green, tooth paste and tooth brush, and six OJ cans that were wrapped completely with duct tape. When I cut the tape away, I found airline size bottles of bourbon.

There was also a can of brown boot polish!

My Christmas was made for me. My team and I each shared it all and we ended up polishing our scuffed white jungle boots, brown. You should have seen the expression on the first sergeant's face the next morning at chow when team 1-5 showed up in brown boots.

I always got hot sauce and lemonade mix.

Perhaps someone who is currently in the sand could give you a better idea. I am sure the needs are different now. Mostly need to know you care and are thinking about him.

Can't go wrong with baby wipes. Joes get dirty. Magazines and books are cool. Some people dig beverage powders. I didn't care about flavoring my water, but some people are all about it. If you go with beverage powders, make sure that it's "just add water"; they probably don't have a pound of sugar to add to it. Jerky's always awesome. CDs and DVDs are cool when there's electricity. Lack of electricity may or may not be a concern for your friend. And you can never have too many bungee cords.

Awesome, guys, thanks for the thoughts! I hope you all have moderately pleasant holidays, at the very least. :)

Send Baby wipes and corn huskers lotion. AA and AAA's, Jerked Meat, Hard Candy, tooth picks w/ the floss, ect.......those little reading lights that you could clip to the top of a book..........send enough for his squad when you send a box.......just advice.
