contract question

Post by DD »

I am going to MEPS this Monday and my recruiter has just told me that since I am taking one incentive (student loan repayment) that the counselor at MEPS will not give me a Ranger contract (a second incentive)as well and will be lucky if I can even get Airborne. He was nice enough to offer that when I got to basic that I could volunteer for Airborne and RIP. However, I do not feel like getting screwed 6 ways from Sunday by the Army. At least not this early on in my career.

I scored high enough on the asvab and gt to get into any program and thought that was all that was necessary. Does anyone know if this is accurate?

you may sometimes recieve more than one option on your contract, but i have never heard of anyone getting the LRP with anything other than Airborne.

I fail to see how the fact that the Army is repaying your student loans that you wouldn't be able to get an OPT40. I suggest you stick it to them. It's about what you want, not them. There is always a way around... One way or another.

I have spoken to two recruiters now and one says you can get both and the other says probably not but you can volunterer. I emailed the goarmy.com recruiter and filled out a little information sheet to see if I qualify but I too dont see the connection that if you get SLR then why you cant get a Ranger contract. Thanks.

I have been searching the forums for topics on the Loan Payback deal, and as im entering my senior year of college, and planning on enlisting upon graduation, it would seem to be in my best interest to take out a loan if i could get it paid back.
-So in the quote you it make it seem like to get the LRP you have to only have airborne in your contract?

Is it possible to get the LRP, get a nice bonus, and get an option 40?

Thanks-

Since this has been posted originally I have been enlightened.

You may indeed have the LRP and an option 40/18X contract.

If you get an option 40, you're getting a bonus.

Thanks a lot SFC Hit It,

So, just to get this crystal clear...

I could take out a 15-20k loan for my senior year of college
Enlist with the option 40, and get a bonus, and have the army pay back the loan, if of course its the right type of loan.

Also i am planning on enlisting with a buddy in the buddy program, will this effect any of the above? Thanks a lot for the clarifactions.

As long as your buddy is qualified for the same things you are, then it should not be a problem.

If your buddy is not eligible for an option 40 then you better rethink yourself.

That's why I don't talk that buddy program bullshit to anyone.

One guy turns out to be smart and the other one dumber than BubbaGump shrimp.

Then it turns out that neither of the cockgobblers join.

You need to do what YOU want to do, and that's be a Ranger right?

Thanks for the advice SFC Hit It.

My buddy is just as qualified as I. We both go to the same college, and will both be seniors. He and I both took the asvab last spring and both scored in the high 90s. So i think with a 4 year degree and high 90 on the asvab we will be able to secure the option 40. He is a genitics major, and im a managerial economics major, but we both decided that 91w (medic) would be a very rewarding field.

I agree that it is about what I want to do, and yes of course that is becoming a Ranger. Ive know him since we were seven, and from the past 14 years I can say that, that is what he wants too.

Thanks for the honest replys about the Loan Payback system and the buddy program. I will take your posts to heart.

Will do SFC Hit It,

I have talked to my schools army ROTC department, and I will be doing ROTC with them this year, my final year in college. I will not be on schlorship or anything like that, Im just doing it so i will get squared away. PT three times a week at 6am, leadership classes, and lab once a week. This along with my own work outs should help me get from 'in shape' to 'ripped' and ready for RIP.
-After talking with the Captain, and MSI instructor sounds like the ROTC department is top notch, so i hope to learn as much as I can.

SFC Hit It,

I just went on to the Loan Repayment Program website,

https://www.armyeducation.army.mil/lrp.html

As I looked under Eligiblity Criteria, the sixth bullet states:

"Enlist in one of the critical military occupational specialties (MOS). These MOS change quarterly. The local Army recruiter will have the current list."

I will be a senior this upcoming year in college, and would like to take out a loan, and have the army repay it, but i would like to be 100% sure it will be repaid. As of now to pay for college, I work a lot, and my Dad chips in. If i can get the loan, i will not have to work as much and my Dad will not have to chip in at all. But if i get the loan, and for whatever reason it does not get paid back, well there goes my whole bonus for enlisting. Which I would much rater invest/save for later in life.
-So my question is will the MOS 91w (medic) qualify me for the loan payback program?I know the criteria says that the list changes quarterly, but I am guessing some MOS's are allways on the list. Is 91w one of those lucky ones? I would also accept 11x, but prefer 91w. With school starting in a month, i need to get on applying for the loan too so im trying to check and double check all aspects of the loan payback system. Thanks-
