Introduction for mchclay10D
Rangers, Veterans et al.,
My name is Clay and I am a 30 year old prior service 19D from Panama City Beach, Fl. I served in the 2nd ACR from 1996 to 1998 at Ft. Polk, La., but I am looking to enlist again within the next 90 days. I should have never gotten out, but the woman I was married to at the time did not like the military lifestyle so I got out on her request...we ended up divorcing years later.
As far as my intentions, it appears from research over the past few weeks that an option 40 for prior service is pretty much unheard of so I am thinking of retraining as Infantry to better my chances for getting a slot for RIP once at my unit.
I have heard of a few people getting Airborne in their prior service contracts so that is what I am shooting for as a minimum at this time.
I have the Ranger workout PDF from Stew Smith so I think I somewhat have an idea of what physical conditioning I need to be in order to succesfully complete the physical rigors.
At any rate, this is just a brief introduction as to who I am and what I am here for. I am always open to suggestions and guidance from others who have already taken this path in their life.

Welcome to the site. First, thanks for your prior service to our great nation and desire to do it again.
Not sure/don't think you qualify to get an option40 contract, but if you don't step on your dick while you are here, you will receive some of the very best advice for your career.

Damn, that Stew Smith has a work out for every MOS and LEO job around!
Why don't you give yourself and APFT and post the scores here and lets see where you are at currently?
Also, if your going to go Infantry at least try and squeeze the airborne option of them. I don't think 2nd ACR was doing PLF's down at Fort Polk.
This is one less step you will have to take in your journey.

Fort Polk. Damn....I fucking HATED Vernon Parish, Leesville, and surrounding area. Lived in Anacoco while I was there....it sucked as well.

As far as the PT score goes I have not yet tested myself, but at this time it is not very good. I have spend the last 8 years with a desk job doing governmental IT. Unfortunately, the last two years (since the divorce) I have smoked cigarettes and drank a bit, but quit about 7 weeks ago.
Maybe it is b/c I have been at an all time low that I feel anything is possible. I played basketball in high school and junior college so I don't really feel like athleticism is a problem for me. Just doing PT again makes me feel like a new man and most days I find myself so motivated that I am having a problem not overtraining myself.
Running is the most difficult for me (from the smoking) and the fact that I am 6'4" 240 lbs (usually about 225 lbs when in shape.
Anyway, I saw a couple of "out of the chair" topics in the PT forum so I think I will start one of those and track my progress. I have given myself 90 days to get back in shape before I enlist again. I realize this is short window, but given a high enough level of determination anything can be accomplished.

I did not ask if you've tested yourself "yet". I said, "how about giving yourself a PT test and posting your scores".
Most here, smoke, drink, and eat copenhagen, sometimes all at once..
I find your "all time low, anything is possible" statement to be quite contradictory to anything I've ever heard. Traditionally, folks at their all time low want to quit.
If your athleticism is not a problem, then you don't need our adivce.

I did not mean for my post to come across as cocky if that was they way you interpreted it. I am here seeking guidance and advice. In my feable mind there is a difference between athleticism and conditioning (the latter is what I lack the most).
Also, I meant that I had been at an all time low not that I am at one currently. Which is why I made the comment about anything being possible having been through what I considered one of the most difficult timeframes in my life.
I am extremely humble before yourself and the other Rangers on this board.
I will give myself a PT test this weekend and report back to you with the results and go from there.

2. I doubt your mind is feable, you've served once and are doing it again.
3. You pulled yourself up by your boot straps, congrats.
4. Don't humble yourself before me, I'm a washed up, 10 year removed from the Army, civilian. You my friend, are answering the call of a war time Army.
5. Take the test, post the results and we will see if we can help.
