Here is a test for you.
Here is a test for you.
A friend did an off the cuff penetration test of various rounds into 1/2" thick sheets of sheetrock. Distance to target 10 yards.
Question how many sheets did each caliber penetrate (completely through not the sheet that captued the round)? Which caliber had the most number of sheets penetrated? I'll post his findings in a few days. I was surprised!
1. 45ACP 230 gr Lawman from Colt 1911
2. 9mm 147 gr Gold dot from Glock 17
3. 40 cal 165gr flatnose from Glock 23
4. 44mag 240 Starfire(PMC) from Ruger 7" Redhawk
5. 12ga 1oz Winchester pumpkin Slug
6. 22 Long Rifle Unknown
I have the sectional density for some of the rounds and I can dig up velocities and KE if needed, but let's just give your best guess first.

Here is a sample .45 ACP Speer Lawman. Muzzle Velocity 845 ft/sec, Muzzle Energy365 ftLbs
Penetrated 12 sheets Worse performer of them all.
But it hit it pretty hard. This surprised me. But I think it might have something to do with the way that big round nose bullet dissipates its energy.
Just a guess.

The slugs performance shocks me a bit. I have seen one go through an unarmed man, 3 walls and through 3 more occupied apartments.
It was a good day to be the assisting officer.

Here are the results. The 12 ga slug did about the same as the .45 and was beat by the 22 LR. BUT the 12gauge nearly knocked the table holding the target. Obviously, penetration and lethality are different animals. A kenetic pulse thing maybe.
Still kind of interesting. 9mm winner
(Muz. vel/KE @ muzzle)
1. .45ACP 12 sheets (845/365)
2. 9mm 21 sheets (985/317) (Hollow Point NO expansion)
3. .40 cal 19 sheets (1060/412)
4. .44 mag 18 sheets (1300/900) (Hollow Point NO expansion
5. 12ga 12 sheets (dented 2-3 sheets after penetration) (1600/2488)
6. 22 cal LR 13 sheets (1255/40)

There was no expansion of any round except the 12ga pumkin ball which deformed a little. Both the .44 and 9mm were hollow points and did not expand/ deform at all! :? WTF is up with that?TC204 wrote:Interesting, I didn't think the 9mm would out penetrate the 44mag. Maybe having less energy it doesn't expand as fast as the 44, letting it penetrate further.
I'd like to see the 7.62x25 Tokarev in this test.
I'd still take my chances with the .22LR over the 12ga. I haven't figured all this out ( way beyond me).
