Advice womens handgun
I would like some input on a handgun for a female friend of mine.
Minimal experience with handguns.
For personal protection.
$350.00-$400.00 New or used, (we have a good used market around here).
I am thinking a .38 or 22 mag (if possible) featherweight hammerless with small grips. Of course the gun shop guys had her looking at real high end shit with Crimson sights and other high speed shit.
I know Charter Arms are reasonable any input???
Thank You

Seecamp or NAA.
Go for the .32
It's DAO, packs a wallop and fits a females hands rather effortlessly.
Found one for you here if you're interested:

A few more bucks, but not by much and has had the meltdown treatment already incorporated.
This thing's bulletproof and a bargain.
I have one as a b/u piece and swear by it.

I have recommended Smith and Wesson 649s to female clients on past details for the following reasons:
-No magazine springs to wear out (revolver)
-You can tell if it is loaded at a glance.
-The hammer is partially exposed so it can be cocked to single action.
-It can be fired repeatedly through a purse or pocket (no slide)
-It fires .357 and .38
When she buys it, UNLOCK THE FRAME/MECHANISM, TAKE THE KEY AND THROW IT IN THE FUCKIN' TRASH.
Have her practice with .38s but carry .357 magums. The other rounds may partially miss thier mark, but that first one will be dead on due to the lighter practice with .38s.
For the house, a simple Stoeger side by side coach gun in 12 guage is perfect. Load it with 00 buckshot. No springs to wear out like on a pump, no mechanical song and dance to get it working during duress. Easy to load and unload. Toss the extra shells in a bathrobe pocket.
For a self defense blade, a Cold Steel Safe Maker I or II is best casue' its a punch dagger that's straight razor sharp, and damn near impossible to disarm her short of severing her hand. It comes with a neck chain similar to a dog tag chain so she can wear it just below her cleavage and a clip so it can be worn inside the waistband or boot.

I have been teaching my HH6 to shoot for the past two months or so. She shoots the HELL out of my Glock 36. She is small framed, and has tiny hands... (he he he)
She fired a Smith 908 and loved it. Was grouping very well with it, but did not like the DA/SA trigger. To an un-accustomed shooter, the transition between DA to SA is a bit confusing to say the least.
Now, she LOVES my G36... the way it fits her hands, the sights, the way it shoots, the trigger pull on it, but... the recoil pulse is a bit much after a few mags.
She shoots the HELL out of my G19 with the 3.5 pound trigger connector as well. Shoots it VERY well.
She does not like a 1911 at all. I say again... AT ALL.
She does like the Springfield Armory XD-9 Compact... shoots the HELL out of it. Even said she wants one for CCW.
She also likes the ... wait, no... LOVES the H&K P2000 Compact 9mm... but, has not fired one yet.
Granted, my wife is not scared to shoot anything at all. But, she is practical. She wants something for CCW (has a Florida permit) and wants something she can shoot often.
My G36 is not practical for her, since the recoil pulse is a bit much. I shoot my G36 every weekend, and even after 250 rounds or so, MY hand gets sore.
She tried the Glock 26, and Glock 27 and did not like either one.
My advice would be... get yourself a Buck Master, or a Ruger Mark3 .22 LR pistol. They are pretty inexpensive, and you can teach her the basics of sight picture, trigger squeeze, and immediate action, on something you can afford to shoot all day long, and it will not intimidate her. Once she is ready, step up to the 9mm. I would not carry anything less than a 9mm for personal defense. Period.
Just my .02
Here is Loly shooting my G19... she shoots either Left handed OR Right handed. WE are working that out now... problem is, she is Right handed, but LEFT eye dominant.

My woman likes to shoot my Springfield XD40. I've looked into picking her up one, and I looked at the sub-compact, but the grip is basically the same as the compact, which fits her hand just fine, and as you all know, that extra inch of barrell really makes a differance.

Gun Safety Tip #6. When unholstering your weapon it's customary to say "Excuse me while I whip this out "

That's true. Loly likes the larger one too, but... as I said, she is practical. She wants one for CCW, and when she put it in a belt slide, the longer grip on the 4 inch barrel "printed" more than the compact.Rangerguru wrote:My woman likes to shoot my Springfield XD40. She wants the 9mm simply because I own 9mm's and .45's... I am a reloader, so... again, the practical side comes out.

Have you ever fired one? I can't STAND the P99. Worst trigger I have ever felt on a hand gun.archangel wrote:Perhaps a Walther P99 Compact. 9mm(recommend Glaser rounds). Grips are adjustable to suit her preferance. Single/Double Action. Never heard a bad word said of it.
There are many guns out there with "adjustable" grips. The S&W M&P series, some of the new H&K's... etc.
I would have her go to a shop that has alot of variety and have her handle different weapons. If it fits good in her hands, and she likes the way the weapon feels, she will learn to shoot it well.

Whatever you do, stay away from the S&W SW40VE. The trigger pull is about 14 lbs, after much modification, it can be brought down to about 10, but that's it, also the ramp is to steep, so it will only chamber hollow points about half of the time. My wife has shot it, and hates it as much as I do.

Thanks
Thanks for the input. I want to stick with a revolver due to the experience level, A feed jam or a simple stove pipe might cause a little panic. If she has confidence in what she handles it will help. Probably a trip to the gun store to fondle..I mean handle the weapons first hand.
Next question.......
Ammo. The TAP rounds, Glaser safety slugs?

I toot around town with a Smith and Wesson 686 7shot and I mix match the rounds.
1st two are .38 ball
2nd two are .38 hollow points
3rd two are .357 Golden Sabers
last is a .357 ball
Speedloaders are filled with .357
For her, have her practice with the .38's and then carry .357 golden sabers.
Galco sells some women's bags that have hidden holsters, modify it so she can shoot right through the bag if necessary.
