We had a Alphabot that was not tabed and made spec 4. Super good dude.....W----- was the last name. Fucker could never pass the 5 mile formation run or some shit like it, but RTOed for 2 PDaddies and hump all day every day, a true ox. He was there at least 4 yrs.

I'm one of the shitbags that spent 4 years in Battalion and never got a tab. Never went to Ranger school at all.
I was promoted to E-5 as a tabless 11B, but was assigned to HHC.

We were discussing this in another thread recently, as I remember during the 1995-1996 timeframe there was a requirement to be an E-4 to attend RS. Many hooahs never got an opportunity to go because there were also no waivers to E-4 at the same time. So 26 months TIS to get E-4 on a 36 month enlistement, means your window of opportunity to go to RS is very narrow.
That whole deal seemed to last about a year, and then they started promoting E-4s with waivers early again and Regt could send E-3s to school.
There was a long OML by that time, even though a bunch of fuckers had quit instead of dealing with Battalion life and knowing they wouldn't be able to go to school.

So there were quite a few tabless E-4s in Bn at that time that may have served 3-4 years.
6 years would be a LONG ass time for an 11B to be tabless though...

One of my best friends in Batt was a guy named Mick. He had spent 5 years in C Co, went to RS 4 times and kept getting hurt.

It had fuckall to do with being a shitbag. He simply kept getting fucked up physically. The mental fortitude was never questioned by anyone. That is why he ended up taking a team in C Co around 2000-2001. He was one of 2 tabless TL's in Regiment. They sent him to the SSG Board, but he/they knew he could never get a squad without his shit.

So he went to RS again and made it to FL before he basically burned in on the jump, then came back and transferred with a PCS Award to Germany, right before OIF kicked off.

Helluva Ranger and I could give a fat rat's ass if he was tabbed or not.

Don't get me wrong, it just sucks that the guy didn't have a chance at RS. Not to sound old but, in my day, when you didn't had a Tab, you were put in a different class than of the guys of the same rank, that had a Tab. I recall being told to not to refer to Spec 4's as specialists when they didn't have a Tab. Anyway, times are certanly different now-in my humble opinion, EVERY combat vet, line dog of the Regiment deserves to be titled as a Ranger and be promoted as such-Tab or not. RS, once again in my humble opinion, cannot be equated to constant combat operations and is less equatable to the definition of a current Batt. Boy. Once again, my opinion only.......

It is still the same, or was when I was there. I was respected as an NCO, and those that knew me personally didn't treat me differently because I didn't have it, but there is always the "shitbag" assumption from thise that see you with Sgt rank and no tab. They also assume you are a soft skill. I was working as a soft skill in the motor pool but was in fact and 11B.

Once the slots opened up, the Motor Sgt sent one of the privates who was a soft skill twice and he never got past Pre-Ranger.
During the whole E-4 to go to RS, and no early promotion to E-4 deal I was either injured, which was the reason I went to the motor pool anyway, or was the Battalion Parts Ordering bitch, which meant I could not go because of my position. There was no-one else that could fill that position.
I was an 11B E-3 and later E-4 and E-5 filling a 63B (mechanic) and 92Y (supply) E-6 position.

I re-enlisted for 3 years after my initial 3 yr enlistment, just so I could complete one of my goals and go to RS.
I did have a window of opportunity to go near the end of '98 but my wife was pregnant and having problems so I thought I could just go after the baby was born. (Which would have been a great time to go because the wife was a post-partum bitch for months)
Battalion (Regiment?) had too many 11Bs working in soft skill positions so they had to "downsize" by order of the Army. Being a tabless 11B E-5 I was a goner.
So I should have gone while my wife was pregnant and just hoped for the best. Hindsight is 20/20.

Ive known a few guys like that. Tim Mclaughling, one of the bes rangers I've ever known was tabless. he was awarded a bronze star with V device as a PFC. I've alsoknown some commo guys who were in B co for about three years who never got a tab.

Trust me, it is very possible. I was an 11B that never got a chance to go to RS. In AT, we were given very few slots for RS as most of the slots went to the guys in the line. And then after my wife developed some medical issues, I was asked by the CSM to take over as the Battalion Budget NCO. I ended up doing that shitty job until I ETS'd. At that point I was a tabless E-4 doing the job 2 civilians and an E-5/6, but they still didn't do shit for me. But they did give me the Civilian Budget job after I got out. So yes, you can be in battalion for 4 years and not get your tab, but it just really sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

I was one of the rare 11B's who never got his tab. I basically kept getting re-injured with a stress fracture, but sucking it up and still training on it, even sometimes on profile seemed to impress my squad leader on up.

Everytime I would try to get my physical for school done the PA would shoot me down. Eventually it got so bad I was in a full on leg cast. After I got off it and rehabbed I didn't have enough time left in the military to go to Ranger School, so I ended up working with the 1sg down in training.

I was well respected by all in my opinion tab or no tab. I was probably one of the few where I was presented a plaque on my last day which really surprised me. I honestly don't think I would've been allowed to stay in batallion if I hadn't pushed myself to hard. On the downside I have an injury that will haunt me forever.

A guy in my son's fire team, ACo 3/75, just got out on 1 Aug. 4 years as a tabless 11B , a hell of a Ranger, strong as an ox, he just couldn't run fast enough to pass the RS PT test. He hurt his knees on a jump early on. Joined the Ill. ANG. Bet he'll be a SGT before long & an asset to his unit.
