Man_of_Ice's Introduction

Post by Man_of_Ice »

Hello,

My name is Nate, I am 25 years old, and currently am a student at Michigan Technological University. I have a BS in civil engineering, and will defend my MS in civil on 20061218. I have been married for 6 months, and my wife is very supportive of my desire to serve.

I am currently in the DEP, and will begin BCT at Ft. Benning 20070112. After BCT, I will be attending OCS, class 005-07. My top three branch choices are EN, MI, and OD. I hope to be branched Engineer, and would love the chance to attend Ranger and/or Sapper School. I realize my odds are slim, but with hard work, the right attitude, and guidance, I can succeed.

I'm still looking around for answers to my questions, and have found the site very helpful and motivating so far. I appreciate the help, and the service of those who have gone before me.

Welcome Nate. A man has but one opportunity to make a favorable initial impression and you have done well. Combat Engineers (CE) is a tough branch; much of the decision of which branch you get will be determined by your OCS class standing. In addition, many of your peers will compete for a slot at the Ranger course -- it improves your chance for a CE platoon. While you are here, please read all the FAQs, stickies and selected threads. Read the Ranger Creed and think about living within these principles. Never, never quit!

Welcome. If you branch EN, you will most likely have the opportunity to attend the Snapper (er, excuse me - Sapper) Course. But, why would you want a tab that women earn?

***Don't get pissed there, Engineers. I was on FLW when that tab was authorized for wear. It seems like every Engineer on post was walking crooked, just so their left shoulder would face the front...

Ranger Steadfast, I have done so. I appologize for failing to follow site procedure properly. I thought I had selected an avatar, I guess I screwed up.

42L5V - I feel that Combat Engineering and Sappers are the closest to a natural extension of what I do that the Army has. I've learned how to build structures, Sappers will give me a chance to learn to un-build them, among other things.
....and I want to blow stuff up.
Whether or not women can earn the tab does not change that desire for me.

Rangers - Thank you for the welcome.

Since you are at MTU, your man of ice name is very logical, like an engineer should think. Welcome and congratulations for your enlistment and desire to serve our country.

Ranger msg_dman - There were a couple main reasons. First, was my initial impression of ROTC. There were a one or two individuals in a large group of ROTC guys who lived down the hall from me who basically treated non-ROTC people like dirt. My perceptions have since been changed significantly by others I got to know in the program, but that was my impression at the time.
Second, when I first started college, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I wanted to focus on getting my degree. I have always believed that I would discover what the right path for me was when the time was right. I have a strong faith that God will guide me if I keep my ears open. As it happened, when my thoughts turned to joining the Army, I thought I only had half a year left of college, too late to join ROTC.

Ranger Bill - The nickname comes from my high school government teacher in Grand Rapids MI, but it does fit at MTU too.

Ranger Scuba Wino - I will remember. Thank you for the reminder.
