Jumping w/o 1950
Anyone here have experience jumping weapons exposed? Any advice on landing that way? HAHA, serioulsy though In addition to that, how many guys have jumped their kit while wearing it opposed to in the chute bag or in your ruck, I'm trying to convince my unit to allow kits in the chute bag or in a ruck and explain to them benefits, I don't think I ever jumped a kit outside of my ruck.

Halo guys jump weapon exposed but we always put our LCE in our rucks. I am way not current so ask TN Rgr for more info. I doubt very seriously the guard is gonna let you jump your wpn exposed. Online a static line put your kit bag in your 1950 for comfort, also jump with a 20 rd mag in your wpn to make up for the not having your kit accessible once on the ground, don't use your safety wire @ lanyard on your reserve and use fastex clips to secure your kit to your ruck. Make sure nothing is loose or flapping you and you should be G2G. There are alot of by the book jumpmasters out there so make sure your shit will fly and looks good then test it out.

thanks, its a fact though, we will be jumping m-16s (static line of course)exposed next week, I think its a great opportunity to hurt someone, but thats just my fear of change from bn., I'm having my whole team put their kit in their rucks, I dont' want them losing something because they don't know how to tie down something properly and we don't get any time for PCIs , I'll check with TN,

M-16's always exposed as stated by RGR Tater.
When you put your sling over your shoulder and rotate one turn so the sight post's are facing forward, have the jumper w/ his left hand hold the hand guards up a bit, so the butt is not under the arm pit, but a bit behind and up, tie the but w/ 1/4 inch cotton webbing connected to rear sling swivel to I believe around the diagnol back strap. Then holding the weapon in place route the waistband through the carrying handle, and back over and tie in the normal quick release fashion.
Tighten that fucker down. If the trooper holds the weapon back and away while you do this it keeps it of the hip, so a left PLF is a non event, if not and it's in the hip, it fucking kills, as a matter of fact some Doctor might tell you 9 months later "you broke your hip, and it's healing just fine..you did know you broke your hip sergeant"..true story.
We wore our LCE's on jumps. Do it a few times , I think it was safe. You get use to it. If high speed drops his ruck and it disappears into the night, you can still fight. I would not want t go into combat any other way. But...your weapon can get damaged on a hard landing, and that it happened at times. Have a good jump!

Your memory is correct. Wearing the web gear allows the jumper immediate access. The only time I jumped a weapon not exposed was in schools. The only thing missing is taping the magazine to prevent accidental loss. I remember in JM school I asked one of the instructors sarcastically what is that? He seemed really surprised that we jumped exposed weapons. Rangers on jump teams for airfield seizures were most likely to bend barrells. I bent 2 in a 3 month period. I hated landing on the damn tarmac but sometimes you had no choice.

We jumped weapons exposed a lot during the 70's. I only had one problem which was the butt breaking off my M16A1 in a high wind jump. We used the M1950 on rare occaisions, wore the LBE under the chute, tied the weapon on the shoulder opposite the door to be exited, barrel up. Most of the time, it was no problem. I always attempted to do my PLF on the opposite side of the weapon.

,
I was jumping the M224 60mm mortar in the 1950 but my LCE was worn and the MC1-1B harness was around the LCE. My .45 was worn in with 550 cord securing it.
Base plate and bipod was carried by the assistant gunner and ammo bearer respectively under the ruck flap straps.
I always attempted a right PLF so as not to land on the mortar. (It smarts)

That's what I was told. Don't get me wrong, I would rather jump with it exposed, especially on a combat jump.Horned Toad wrote:which is what I heard was the main reason the RGT went back to using the M1950.Ranger Luna wrote:Just watch out for bent barrels.
