Intro (Prior Service)
Greetings,
My name is George Aaaaah, I'm from Florida.
Prior Air Force (Dec 1994 - Nov 2000).
Did 6 years and then got out to try civilian career.. did ok out there, but realized I was born to be in the military, so I've been working with an Army recruiter the past couple months on getting squared away for the Army.
I am only 5' 5" (and a half!) which came as a surprise to me since I was 5' 6" (and a half) during my Air Force days. So somehow as if I wasn't short enough, I've lost an inch.
Someone was saying that it must be the cartilege in my back and leg joints.. whatever, doesn't matter, I am what I am (SHORT).
I'm 35 years old, married with 3 kids and will be going in as an E3 since I have an Associates degree.
I tested and passed the Staff Sergeant WAPS test for the AF (E5) but turned down the stripe and got out instead of re-enlisting. (Ranks up there with one of the dumbest things I've ever done.. hindsight and all that stuff..)
I was deployed to Germany as part of a PERSCO team (Personnel in Support of Contingency Operations) during Operation Shining Hope (1999). Received a Joint Service Achievement Medal while working along side Army and Marine personnel.
When I first started in the AF I was an F-15 Crew Chief in the 1st Fighter Squadron at Tyndall AFB, FL. Later I cross-trained to become a 3S0X1 (Personnel).
I weighed 255lbs 4 or 5 months ago (remember, I'm 5' 5"!) and now I'm down to 179. I probably won't make weight, so I'm going to have to be taped. I'm fairly certain I'm good to go right now, but my recruiter wants me to be 2% under the requirements which apparently is 26% bodyfat for Prior Service. So he wants me to be 24%. I think I look pretty fit, it's my "love handles" that are doing me in right now.
Thanks for allowing me to become a part of this great community.

As an E-3 with a wife and three kids, you will be facing some financial difficulties and you won't see much of your family as you go through training and you'll probably get deployed shortly thereafter. You, your wife and your kids will all be making big sacrifices. But others have, and I wish you well and thank you for your desire to join the Army. You should have read the FAQs and Stickies. Please do so. It's an OPSEC violation to use your full name on this site and I'm sure one of the Administrators will clear that up. But why are you here and in what MOS are you interested?
WE NEED MORE RANGERS!

Thank you Ranger Bill.Ranger Bill wrote: But why are you here and in what MOS are you interested?
I'm just here to learn and share with other like-minded military and ex-military folks. I'm excited about joining the Army and making a difference in our generation's fight with an "ism".
Our grandparents fought Naziism, our parents fought Communism, and now it is our turn to fight Islamic Facism.
I'm still open-minded about which MOS I would like to get. My recruiter has assured me that since I'm prior service, that I will most likely get an equivalent MOS to my former AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code.. I'm sure you know that's what the AF decided to call it's MOS's, but for any other readers who may be lurking). Since I retrained from F-15 Crew Chief, to Personnelist, then he says I will most likely be either Admin, Human Resources Specialist, or HRIS Admin (which is what I was in my 5 1/2 civillian endeavor).
He says the only chance that I would get to do something else, is if, while at the MEPS they pull up the MOS availabilities and Admin is not on there.
I also have a PHR (Professional, Human Resources) Certification that he says can be used toward promotion points if I get in an HR position.
Honestly, I would like to go to Airborne school. The running times are the only thing that makes me wonder if I can actually qualify, but I'm working real hard. I have a very small stride so I'm usually running flat-out with a super high heart rate while taller people are doing a fast paced jog. I'm not complaining mind you, I'm just stating one of my challenges that I'm striving to overcome.
Thanks for the warm reception. Thank you for all your service to all the folks that welcomed me.
I'm hoping to get stationed in the Keiserslaughter(sp?) area of Germany, or if I get stateside, hopefully Texas since I'm a Native Texan, or at least somewhere warm!

If you have a PHR, and do "get stuck" with an admin MOS, you need to lean hard toward 42A as a MOS. It's a direct feed into the warrant ranks, and with your background, age, etc. that's where I would go if I were you. Of course, the Army promotion system (if you're not familiar with it) is notoriously hard on anything admin at the E-5 and especially the E-6 level.
PM me once your recruiter lays out your options, if you've got admin questions.
