Anyone who gets that worked up over sport is fucking retard.
Several years ago, a study was done. In conclusion, it determined that terrorism and soccer holliganism stemmed from two common themes. People became soccer hooligans or terrorist (the IRA was the most commonly cited group) as a way to overcome disappointments in their lives, such as not realizing their full potential and that by becoming a holligan or a terrorist, it elevated them to a status in life that was not available to the proffessionaly or personaly. In other words, it allowed people on the lower portion of the social scale to become unique and revered by the people in their surroundings. If I can find the study, I'll post it. I'm pretty sure it was an English study.

The FOOTBALL ( ) hooligan problem in the UK was huge around the 1960s/70s/80s and once called the 'British disease'.
It has calmed down down now as the sport has become more commercial and money has been pumped in from cable TV.
Also deaths in 2 major incidents has led to all seating rather than 'standing on the terraces' and things have quietend down...

Anyways...

It is an old old problem... (histroy lesson part  ), goes back to the 13th century when village 'folk' played a form of the game with an inflated pig's bladder and used the game to settle land disputes, grudges and tribal type arguments and basically 'kicked the shit out of each other!'
There are a few villages that keep up this ritual once a year...I went to one where on either side of a hill lay two pubs in two different villages and around 300 people played a football / rugby type game, aiming to get a small barrel to their pub to score a goal - results in a massed brawl.

I digress...

As the game evolved into the modern sport it is now, there has always been the violence behind it, as districts, towns and cities backed their teams in the thousands in hard working class (all male) tribal manners.
Many don't go for the game, but to show their support for their colours, the mates and to protect their stadium, their pub, their 'manor'.

It is a social thing, that is slowly disappearing as money opens the sport to women and kids, the middle and upper classes and becomes a business...the violence is rarely seen now but fans are still segrated inside the stadium and some incidents do happen after the match, in the pubs and when teams go abroad for various competitons.

I think it's in the British blood.

During the 2002 World Cup, the Korean police were stopping known holligans at the airport and putting them on the next thing smoking back to their homelands. It's ridiculous. It's a fucking game. On a personal note, when I was growing up, I played soccer. My mom pulled me out as soon as the season was over. I kind of liked it, so I asked her why she pulled me out. She said when she was growing up in Argentina, only the hooligans played the sport and all the supporters were animals. So I never played and think she breathed a little earlier. Right now, I think Southern Brit is salivating at the fact I'm part Argie and married to a sheep shagger. Take your time coming up the with the jokes and they better be good!!!!

Ranger Holmchicken,

I have resisted the Argie comments (so far) , though Diego Marradonna was the greatest footballer.

As long as they don't stray back onto the Falklands again, we'll be fine!

Yeah, he was good. Too bad so much of his talent went up his nose. You know who else had a try out for Bocca Juniors, but decided to play rugby instead? Hugo Porta, best rugby player out of Argentina. He could have played either game and excelled. As for the Falklands, that was a military junta in power and not supported in my household. Today if they try it, fuck em'. Hope the Brits kick the shit out of them again.

When we (England) beat Argentina in the World Cup '02, it was madness... me and a few mates got blind drunk, went out on the streets for a bit of flag waving and then ended up calling bars and clubs in Buenos Aires, to have a few laughs!! Great fun!!

Novemebr 12, at Murrayfield. This is going to be THE game. Scotland vs. Argentina. Argies have a full test side, so after the Springboks in BA, they're going over the pond to play Scotland, Ireland and Italy. My other half has her roots in Scotland, so this is going to be a tense day in the household. November is going to be an awesome month for rugby, with everyone looking at getting a little payback for the Lions tour. I don't remember to much from the World Cup in 2002. All I know is that the Koreans went ape shit whenever they won a game and I stayed drunk for about a month solid   .

They beat France or some shit, but yeah, 50,000 Koreans screaming "Tay-Hamingo!" whatever it means, was a site to behold. Let me dig up some photos and I'll post them.

Check this out. Kiwis, a weird group of people.
