There is no doubt in my mind that Mike Yon should win a fucking Pulitzer for the writing that he is doing.
There is no other combat correspondent in the world doing what he is doing. Not one. He stands alone.
No one pays his fucking bills. He lives on the generosity of Big Army, and he gets a little spending money to buy shit at the PX when people send him donations through the PayPal link on his site.
I do not know if Mike has a book deal, but he sure as hell deserves one.
This is a guy who just got up and decided, fuck it, I am a writer, a military writer, so I will go to Iraq and do it. He did, and he did it without any commercial sponsor, no authorization from anyone, no credentials.
He is former SF. So the guy could be a combatant. He is the real deal. He could be contracting right now, making big bucks.
But he wrote a book before, and this came along....and no other writer in the world is doing what he is doing, and it is quite possible that no other writer in the world could do what he is doing.
Think about the balls that it takes to be former SF, and to decide that you will go on ops with a military unit carrying only a fucking camera.
I sincerely hope that whomever replaces LTC Karilla will not throw Mike out of there. He is writing the story of that unit, in a way that brings tears to my eyes everytime that I read.
I pray for this guy every day. Seriously. If he does not die, he just may write the definitive book on that part of the war up north, in Mosul. Hell, he has already done it, if you just go back and read his posts from day one.
Mike Yon is the premier combat correspondent doing the deed today. He is a national treasure.
If you have not read his site, do it. You will not regret it.

Maybe this should be considered for him. If he's working to better the Nation, better the world and better the causes for the American Mission-it's a fantastic way of recognizing those who do started by our first President Bush. An outreach organization that has it's roots in recognizing the best of those that give back to society.
