Officer In The Rangers
Officer In The Rangers
On this page I have read, that there is no guarantee to be a part of the Rangers if you are an officer. http://www.armyranger.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=8269
Can someone please tell me what my chances of being an officer in the Rangers are?
I really want to be a part of the Rangers, but I want to be an officer just as much. I don't only want to be an officer, because the pay is higher, but also because of family tradition, and being an officer seems like it is just more fun.
Then on the other hand, I have wanted to be an Army Ranger for a long time, and I want to be an Army Ranger just as much as I want to be an officer. I really hope I don't have to choose between them. So if you have an answer to my question please reply.

You can serve as an Officer in the Rangers but chances are really slim and it's a daunting process. Not to mention you won't even be eligible until you have already been a platoon leader and then you have to have the support of your chain of command and then hit the year group right and then....as you can see it's kind of like gambling.
Or...You Enlist for an Option-40 contract pass OSUT, ABN and RIP...BADA BOOM BADA BING...You're in! Not to mention the Army will give you a big fat bonus and ALL THE CHICKS WILL DIG YOU!

Ranger Silverback, can you please explain what you mean by "hit the year group right"? Thank you.Silverback wrote:You can serve as an Officer in the Rangers but chances are really slim and it's a daunting process. Well, so much for family traditions.mike14 wrote:Thanks, I am going to give that a try.

What was it that I was saying over on the OCS site this morning regarding GenX children and how self-serving they are?

FUN? That's the first time I heard that as a prinicipal motivation for wanting a commission. What the fuck do you think is fun, anyway? If you think shooting and blowing shit up is fun, then officers certainly don't do as much of that as enlisted. If you think maybe you'll be driving more instead of humping a ruck, sitting back at the CP instead of being out on patrol, getting to go into a heated tent for briefings instead of pulling security on the perimeter - if you think that's what makes it more fun, if by more fun you mean easier, then you're exactly the kind of officer this Army doesn't need.

mikeyboy, you need to figure out what you want and PRIORITIZE it. Then put a plan together.
If you want to be an officer first, then do that - but realize that you probably won't serve in the 75th. You can still become a Ranger by going to Ranger School, but you will probably never wear a scroll.
If you want to go to the 75th, then enlist. Doing that does not mean you can't become an officer later. If you get your college degree before enlisting, you can serve your time in the 75th, then go to OCS and become and officer. Alternatively, you can enlist straight out of high school, then at the end of your enlistment, apply for Green to Gold and get your commission through ROTC while attending college after your enlistment.
In addition to that, I think it's a pretty safe bet that you increase your chances somewhat of being accepted into Ranger Regiment as an officer if you spent about 7-10 years as a Ranger NCO who excelled as a leader.
Partner, I'm not going to be all dramatic and tell you that it's no fun being an O. It's just not as 'fun' as being a Sergeant. I can't think of too many jobs available to officers that are anywhere near as rewarding as being a squad leader, or in my mind, as fun and rewarding as being a team leader.
I can't deny that the pay is better. I'm not going to open the can of worms as to weather we deserve it, but I will tell you that they SQUISH every last fucking drop out of you to get their money's worth. And in addition to that, based solely on base pay, I don't think you could call ANYBODY in the Army wealthy, except maybe those with the silver stars on their collars.
What is more important, Mr. It's All About Me Me Me? Pride, job satisfaction, the ability to directly be responsible for your soldier's development and well-being, a genuinely interesting job day-in, day out? ....or higher pay that you get because you sacrifice yourself in that you could potentially find yourself a slave to or victim of politics more often that I'M willing to admit and where you will literally have about 10% of your career spent with troops and 90% of your career where you feel like you're an extra in the movie 'Office Space'?
Food for thought.

Officers should have MANDATORY enlistment time. Only then will they be squared away.sobersides wrote:If you get your college degree before enlisting, you can serve your time in the 75th, then go to OCS and become and officer. I don't know about this one. Opinions vary. I personally don't think it would matter as much as people tend to think.ANGRYCivilian wrote:Officers should have MANDATORY enlistment time. I agree. I believe it has everything to do wit the officer and less with being prior enlisted. I have seen super troop NCO's turn in to assbag LT's, and shitty soldiers become brilliant officers.hit_it wrote:I don't know about this one. Opinions vary.
