This is all "Same shit, different day" stuff. There wasn't tha Selective Service then, but back in my heyday, Central America was the shit: The Contras, Sandanistas, El Salvador and the like. Some dipshit protestors then protested against our involvement with everything going on down there, and a exceedingly large percentage of them had NO fucking idea of what they were talking about. Even my ex-wife talked shit about how we shouldn't be supporting the Contras, and the govt' in El Salvador, and she supported the protestors. I argued against her, and she would respond with, "Oh, well you've been brainwashed with all of that Ranger stuff." I told her, "No, I've been there, BITCH. I know what the fucking deal is, and you and your friends don't have a fucking clue."

I didn't throat punch her, because there was some bullshit law against it, I think.

Like I said, she's my EX-wife.

DoorGunner makes some very good points and touches on something that's been bothering me lately. The more I hear stories in the news of protestors and deserters, the more it reminds me of Vietnam. Back during the first Gulf War there was a conscious effort to avoid another Vietnam (including attitudes on the homefront). After 9/11 EVERYONE (so we were told by our stateside friends) was flying the flag. When we first went into Afghanistan everyone seemed behind it. As time went on and we went into Iraq the attitude started to change, but at first the reaction was 'We're against the war, but we support our troops'. Now more and more people are coming out publicly AGAINST OUR TROOPS.

There's a growing attitude that we (as a country) are evil invaders and the regimes we're overthrowing are good, simple people. Same attitude so many had 30-35 years ago. It sickens me. Now, I don't believe the situation is quite so bad as it was then...yet. But I'll be honest, I wouldn't find myself shocked or surprised if I saw a news report showing a group of soldiers returning amidst a crowd spitting and calling them baby killers. To my RVN brothers - I'm sorry if I'm waaaayyy off base here. Perhaps there's no comparison at all. I was just a kid during Vietnam and don't remember anything about it first hand. But the attitudes of this generation concern me deeply. How long until the pendulum swings back? Sorry for the thread hijack. /end rant

Registering for the Selective Service System is a easy task to complete. The 18th B-day individual takes his young ass down to any local U.S. Post Office and fills out the little card. Bring your SSN# with you because that is needed if you can't remember your number.

This law has been on the books many years. It is a painless thing to do and accomplish. If down the road you want to file for any form of Federal employement or to receive a grant/loan to attend college then non-completion of this form within (say) ten days of your 18th B-day is gonna come around and bite you in the ass. Your choice.

I'm reminded of the scene from the movie "Stripes" where each of the platoon members were discussing why they joined the Army, and the idiot in the platton says.."my dad was in the Army, my grandfather was in the Army, and I thought I should join before I was drafted." To which Bill Murray points out "...there is no draft anymore." Fucking idiots.

At lunch the other day some kids were talking about the draft and some kid said "If they brought the draft back, I'd try to break my ankle or something." All I said is "You're a panzy" while he made excuses about not dying for an unjust war. He's a long haired hippy. This generation blows.

That's why were here. We are willing to do what it takes, so kids like that can live their lives they 'way they want to.' They are lucky I love my country more than anything.
