Martial arts for young teenage girl
No, it is not a porn site.
My wife wants my youngest daughter, 13 years old, to get into some sort of martial arts. I suggested she pack a snubby .38, but my wife frowns on that.
Gee, women.
Anyway...
1. What is out there now?
2. What is out there, and within range of Fayetteville, Spring Lake area?
I could always teach her myself, but having a formal setting, and time dedicated to the concept of beating up folks, is a lot better for her.

My kid goes to a new place just outside the Yadkin gate. If you want, I can PM you the teacher's number, etc. There are already a couple of younger girls in his class - maybe close to your daughter's age.

I started Karate at 12 or 13...it was great, exercise, discipline, defense wise, etc.rgrokelley wrote:No, it is not a porn site.

There are a lot of good guys in this area. TFTT in Angier is one place.....Is that too far? They might be a little aggressive for 13 yo girls tho.

Angier is a little far. I was hoping for Spring Lake, or even near SanfordBadMuther wrote:I started Karate at 12 or 13...it was great, exercise, discipline, defense wise, etc.rgrokelley wrote:No, it is not a porn site.

Do a yellow pages search in your area. Then go to each of the dojos you find listed, and talk to the owner. Look for a dojo that is neat and organized, and instructors who are confident and talented, but not chest-beaters or thugs. Most places will give you a free two hour class to see if you like the school. Take advantage of that.
I think that at 13, the above points are the most important. You don't want her to get in a school where she will be hurt or treated inappropriately. Beyond that, virtually any style would benefit her.
There are good and bad in any style. Every move in every style will not necessarily work for every individual, as each of us is built differently. In my opinion, mixed martial arts offer the best choices, as you can basically pick and choose techniques from a number of styles and build your own martial arts toolbox.
I do think a dojo that honors tradition and ceremony is the best choice, especially for a teen. The discipline and respect which they learn in that type of environment carry over into their school work, their home life, and other sports.
If I had to pick a single style for a 13 year old female whom I've never met, I guess I'd select Taekwondo. I personally don't like that style at all, but since it is built primarily around kicks, it would probably be a good choice for a young girl. I say this because most girls lack upper body strength, but have strong legs. Kicking will most likely be one of her best defenses.
Good luck. My boys have been on their martial arts paths for nearly four years now. It has helped them in becoming more confident, more focused, more determined, and more respectful. Of course, the strength and endurance they have gained goes without saying.

My son just started taking Taekwondo (he is eight) through ATA. Not real impressed at this point. Not much on disipline (which I was looking for) or teaching good techniques. Might be looking for another school. Kind of funny to see ten year olds with Black belts that can't do a decent front kick! :?

Might be your choice of guns she frowns at. Fuck that snubby shit, Get the girl a Glock or XD. I dont blame your wife for her disappointment. She knows good weapons is all.rgrokelley wrote:No, it is not a porn site.

As a female I recommend the snubby .38, but that's just me and your wifey is the one you have to please. Again as a female who does martial arts I recommend jui jit su or something similar. Tae Kuk Mu Sul is one of the ones I would recommend as well, but since I'm not in your area I don't know if they offer it out there. It's and awesome Korean martial art, you could google it and find out if it's in your area.
I also think you should visit dojos in your area as recommended above and follow that good advice. HTH

I disagree, you can fire a hammerless snubby 6 times without a jam from inside a purse or bag, but you can usually only get away with 1 or two if you are lucky before a slide catches up on something. Women are more likely to carry inside a purse or bag and the ability to fire from inside may save them. Moot point being that she is 13, but just my 0.02$.Might be your choice of guns she frowns at. fuck that snubby shit, Get the girl a Glock or XD. I dont blame your wife for her disappointment. I'm a judo slug; have been since 1965 and I'll probably die on the mat. Try to find a judo facility. www.sohkjudo.com

School Info
Sifu Edwards has taught at this location since 1987. He is a lifetime honorary member of the 3rd Special Forces Group and has instructed many Army and Air Force special operations teams.
Due to time constraints on the instructor questions other than becoming a student should be directed to the RDU location.
Class times:
Mon thru Thursday 7pm to 9pm
Visitors should arrive before the start of a class.

Kung Fu is only effective if you carry a flute strapped across your back. I saw every episode, and I know!panthersix wrote:Wing Chun Kung Fu

David Caradine made it very very popular.....
Too much useless flowing for beauty (it is perdy to watch) vs. effect.
Tae Kwon Do...flashy kicky...can hurt.
Karate...motion for a purpose...can hurt.
Judo...throws for a purpose...will hurt.
ju jitsu...fucking ouch!!!
Aikido...Stephen Segal...but very, very effective ouch!
All martial arts will teach strength and dicipline, If you are looking for self defense, find a self defense course (pref. taugh by female assault victims). More real world, accurate street smarts...

As stated, I think Mixed MM is the way to go. If I had to pick one single martial arts style for self defense, it would be Krav Maga, hands down. It's brutal.
