Re: Night land Nav
It's pretty much like day time except it's dark and harder to see things like obstacles and terrain features, unless there is a 3/4 or full moon, no clouds and you're not under double or tripple canopy. You'll move slower and make shorter strides, so adjust your pace count accordingly. Usually there are more bugs. Hope it doesn't rain...PO wrote:Rangers what was your first Night time orienteer like? what tips would you have for an FNG?

and it's harder to terrain associate, so you rely more on dead reckoning.

To my dying day, I will swear Bigfoot walked past our commo site on my first RRD mission that was up there. Jim and I were dug in some thick brush and it is fucking dark out. I think Jim was on radio watch, but I am woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of something big moving through the brush on two legs with no lights. Its just one. Not two, not a squad, just one moving fast. It moves by our hide site probably within 30 feet, never stops just keeps trucking. Well its my first mission with these guys and there is no way I am saying shit cause the last thing I need is Jim going back to the others nd saying I am scared of the dark. Well come daylight, real causal like I mention to Jim, " Hey I thought I heard something big move by the site last night". Jim was like, fuck dude what the fuck was that? Well no shit he heard it, but he said there was no way he was waking up the new guy and having him think he was scared of the dark
