Early in the LRRPs existance, Westmoreland flew out to the fire support base to see how his pet project was coming along. Our Team had just come in from a mission, I hadn't slept or ate for three days, looked like a green raccoon, and smelled like a goat....and some 2nd Lt from MI comes running through our hooches babbeling about we should look sharp, Westmorelands coming to talk to us. He's all in starch and spit shine (including his Huey) but he couldn't have cared less what WE looked like....in fact, I think he liked seeing the guys in "war paint".

Both "Westy" and "Abe" enjoyed being with combat troops. When the 42d Vietnamese Ranger Battalion came back following a 56 day operation, I had not shaved for a couple weeks. We were on top of a mountain near Rach Gia. My boss told me to go by the Advisor Team HQ and report that we were back. I went into the TOC and asked the OPS NCO if the war was over. He said "NO!," so I told him we were back. That evening I ran into him at the club. He allowed that I had cleaned up pretty well, considering the way I looked that morning. REMF!
