Munich

Just watched the DVD and I read the book "Vengeance" a few years back.

There was some debate as to the accuracy of the book but the movie followed it pretty closely.

I thought it was pretty good. I'm having a hard time understanding why some thought it was pro-Palestinian, liberal etc. (and I'm further to the right than Genghis Khan so that's saying something.)

I'll give it 2 1/2 stars.

Jarhead

Well, I generally enjoyed this movie but I treated it as entertainment and not as history....sort of like Starship Troopers.

I perceived a generally sado-masochistic gay tendency throughout the movie...that was a bit troubling.

Don't get me wrong, it had some pretty funny moments and the cinematography was really impressive.

I'll give it 2 stars.

I've had it with these mother fucking snakes on this mother fucking plane!

Snakes on a Plane is the best bad movie ever.

It knows that it's a bad movie and it doesn't fucking care. They pull it off with such style and moxie it reminds me of the Evil Dead trilogy.

Swap out the demons with snakes, the cabin with a plane cabin and Bruce Campbell with Samuel L Jackson and there you go.

It's fucking awesome!

Wow! An honest and insightful movie review. George Orwell once said that the best poetry is "good bad poetry". Poetry that knows it's bad, but doesn't try to pretend it is what it isn't. I think that's exactly what you saw in this movie.

Three offbeat comedies now on DVD and well worth the price:

Shaun of the Dead: hilarious British spoof of "Night of the Living Dead".

Incident at Loch Ness: Werner Herzog's very funny, very clever takeoff on the cult of monster sightings in Loch Ness, Scotland.

Bullshot: Centers around a Flashman/James Bond-like character in the post-Victorian era. The funniest British comedy I've seen in ten years. I laughed till I cried. Not available in "Region 1" unfortunately, so you'll need a "region free" DVD player.

You can find any of these movies on ebay.

Munich I thought was damn good. I didn't see the 'pro Palestinian' view, as well. 4 0utta 4 stars for me

Pirates of the Carribean Not nearly as good as the first. It seemed too long. Great special effects, but it seemed to drag. 1 star.

Shreck 2 I know this is waaaay old, but I recently watched it again. If you watch the movie credits all the way through, they do a Far far away Idol contest with Simon. It was funny and worth watching. 4 stars

:? ..not as funny as his other movies like Old School. There were about 3 really funny scenes..the rest was just boring. The only reason why I liked it is because I was with a crowd of people. All my friends really liked it and made me laugh  .

The best was the outtakes at the end

borebrush wrote:What about the movie that Steven Speilberg ripped off? Sword of Gideon, which I also own. I know, who cares... but not one mention of that story being told before, in fact they tout it as "being told for the first time".
Cynics say there are only 7 stories in the human saga, and every book, poem, play, and flick is simply a rehash of one of them.

Last year I was watching a TBS airing of Akira Kurasowa's 1961 movie Yojimbo. It's black & white, subtitled, and shot on a low budget so it never got any international exposure.

So here's the plot:

This mysterious Samurai blows into a small Japanese town where two criminal factions are competing for control. This Samurai with no name is a badass; you can just tell from frame one. He walks down the main street of town and runs into a bunch of gangsters from one of the factions who make jokes about him and mock him. He isn't ready to do battle yet, so he walks into the local noodle shop and orders up some grub. After being served, he tells the shop owner he has no money. The shop owner tells him the two factions in town are always looking to hire sword-slingers. When badass Samurai exits the noodle shop, the gangsters are still down the road yelling obscenities at him. He walks toward them but stops momentarily in front of the casket makers shop. "Better get three caskets ready," he says, "No! Make that four caskets."

Do I have to tell you what happens next?

About then a light bulb goes off in my head and I yell at myself, "I'm fuckin' watching A Fistful of Dollars here! Frame for frame! Storyboard for storyboard! Watching the whole movie, it became crystal clear that the entire plot for Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood’s 1964 epic was ripped off verbatim from Akira Kurasowa's Yojimbo! Just substitute cowboys for Samurai.

And Kurasowa never got one line of reference in the movie’s credits. Happens all the time.

Bruce Willis's Last Man Standing is the same movie, too, although they actually got authorization to do it.

Akira Kurosawa was a fantastic film maker. He influenced a lot of people outside of the chambara genre. Hell, his influence can be seen in the fucking Star Wars trilogy!

Also, Taledega Nights blew. Pretty much all the funny shit in the movie was in the trailer. You could condense all the good jokes from that film into about a 5 minute block and be done with it.

I hear you. Hollywood is populated with reprehensible slimeballs.

On the other hand, plagiarism from an entertainment point of view isn't always a bad thing.

For instance, I loved Waterworld. But there again, it's a frame-by-frame, subplot-by-subplot rip-off of Mad Max.

Then of course there's the most ripped-off movie in human history: Aliens.

I almost hate that godam movie for giving Hollywood the idea that Space Marines, blue light cells, fog machines, and 12 ft. ceiling fans mounted in ventilation tunnels ought to present in the next 500,000 movies Tinsletown turned out after Aliens.
