Re: Athens is burning!!!!
I went to Diner tonight with some friends and talked over souvlaki and beer. The consensus is that things will eventually return to normal and that there is a mix of reasons for the people’s outburst. In general they are not happy with the government and after year after year of scandals with no one taking responsibility people just got fed up and the killing of the 15 year old was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
I went on a motorcycle ride through the downtown area at 19:30 and things were calm but in other areas they were at it again. Who knows where this will lead. With the bad weather coming over the weekend I’m sure the hooligans will stay home…..

Hey if you want to visit it's okay. I'll insure your well out of the way of the masked desperados. It would be fun watching them go at each other.wellfed wrote:Chris,Chiron wrote:ANGRYCivilian wrote:I'm confused as to what started this; a police officer shoots a kid who threw a molotov cocktail at him?
It's a crazy world, sometimes...most of the time. Stay safe.
This is what happened. As a squad car passed some hooligans threw rocks at it and ran away. The officer lost it and jumped out screaming in lose translation "you want to F**k with me well take this" and fired 3 rounds. He said two in the air and one on the ground. It is not clear which bullet hit the 15 year old that was passing by and according to witnesses not with the hooligans.
The boy died and the police officer is in jail pending court. Even if this was 1st degree murder the murderer is behind bars so there is no reason to destroy 5 or 6 cities including the lively hood of hundreds of shop keepers and so on.
Things are far from being under control and speculations are flying all over. There are people that want Greece out of the EU and those that will want to remain in the EU. If that is what this economic crash brings then it may be civil war. If cooler heads prevail and people endure the whims of Brussels then it will be back to normal soon.
I guess this isn't a good time to visit?!

Re: Athens is burning!!!!
Something interesting just popped up in the news. Paris, Berlin, London, Moscow and Brasilia are having similar problems.
Students and left wing supporters are supporting the Greek “revolution” sort of speak and using it as a launch vehicle to support their own agenda be it left wing or anything else. They protest the killing of that 15 year old boy by "authority" and riots start.
The fact that there is a worldwide economic crash or crunch or recession (call it what you wish) gives the poor and left wing a stepping-stone to demonstrate. Most are turning violent as the quiet and peaceful demonstrations don’t have a result.
This is going to be interesting.
