Thanks for the input. I finally got off my ass and picked up a few things. I got a couple of Mossin Nagants from J&G for about $70 each. The m44 had a really nice bore, pretty good wood, but some rust on the receiver. The 91/30 had no rust, decent bore and good wood.
From AIM I picked up a Swiss K31 7.5x55mm, a Czech Vz24 8mm Mauser, and an Enfield #4 Mk I .303. The K31 had a little rust on the receiver and damage on the stock (which is pretty common from what I understand). The Enfield and the Vz were in really good condition. I got these 3 for about $100 each. AIM was better to deal with than J&G from my limited experience.
I gave all of these a through cleaning. I found assembly/disassembly at http://www.surplusrifle.com/ . I did some sanding or stripping on all the stocks. Some was a light sanding to remove grease others was a little more aggressive. I know some folks hesitate to do this but I figured at about $100 each, they aren't going to loose much of the value.
These things are a blast to shoot. Considering they are all 50+ yrs old they are pretty accurate. Ammo is a bit of a problem for the K31 but I have found all of the other locally. FMJ ammo is handy but some of this is corrosive as mentioned earlier. This is not that big of a deal because I take a foaming bore cleaner to the range and give the guns a shot while they are still hot before I leave the range.
Since there are no local sources for me to buy Mil Surplus I am interested in good or bad experiences others have had when ordering online. I know it's like rolling the dice but for lower priced guns I figure WTF I can always use them for parts. I'd like to have a good source before buying something pricey online.
What I have learned so far:
1) it's well worth the time and money to get a C&R permit
2) my eyes aren't as good as they used to be
3) 100m with iron sights is a lot farther than it used to be
4) this shit is fun!
